Congratulations Runners

It's the tough runs that make the adventure better. Some of you just had one of those. The nice, flat road marathons make for good times on the clock. But running through a foot or more of fresh snow with a bunch of crazy people during a Michigan winter is one of those epic adventures that we talk about for years to come. When you tell your grandkids about this years from now, the snow can even be up to your waist if you want.

Marathons have been cancelled for far less than the conditions were at Groundhog. This was Michigan though and if you could get there, there was no doubt the race was on...six loops...following the snow trench...pickles at the turn-around...chili/ beer at the finish. The 'snowtrack' made for some congestion and I regrettably was a little annoyed at runners who would just stop in track at the aid stations while dozens of runner had to immediately adjust into the 'snow berms' from behind. But all was fairly (relatively) easy going by the 2nd & 3rd laps or was it the 3rd & 4th? Can't remember as it all seemed to meld together into the fluffy whiteness after awhile. The finisher medal and hoodee were great (as well as all the free access race photos posted afterwards) but I echo the comments about no postrace shuttle...Thankfully I got a ride, but we can't always assume the kindness of strangers, so I hope Don can sort that out next year...

Nice course, enthusiastic volunteers, bad weather (about: 2013)

Good - Nice hoody and medal. Scenic course with frequent aid stations, though a short loop marathon is a little tedious. Very friendly and enthusiastic volunteers, despite the challenging weather.
Bad - No food on the course except pickles at one aid station. No heat in the tent after running all morning in the snow. Good beer provided but hard to drink it when you're shaking from cold.
Worse - No shuttle back to parking lot after race. Expecting people to walk along a snowy road for 3/4 mile or whatever it is in very cold conditions after running a marathon is not smart. With the small number of runners one van would have done it.

Round and round.. And round (about: 2013)

I think the volunteers are what makes a good race great.. Thanks to all the volunteers that came out in the weather and manned the aid stations.
The good
Great hoody and medal. I liked the 4.4 mile loop course with aid stations evenly spaced, the other advantage is I had a drop bag at the main tent for any changes I needed so after two loops I got out the yak tracks which helped a ton.
The not so good.. Shuttles to the race but none back, my wife was walking back after completing the 1/2 and someone gave her a ride so she decided to start shuttling people until I got done with the full.. They ran out of propane to heat the tent so it got cold fast... Tried to stay and eat my canned chili and have a couple of beers but it was so cold we had to just end up leaving

What a great race! I had such a good time. The volunteers and organizers were incredibly helpful and friendly. My fellow runners seemed to be having as much fun as I was. The hoodie and medal are really nice. I was super excited to get a hoodie instead of yet another race t-shirt. I cannot wait to run this again next year! I will tell stories about this race for a long time.

Awesome run in the snow (about: 2013)

Ran the inaugural race here this year in the midst of snow storm. Despite a foot of snow on a 4.4-mile bike path loop (the loop is a nod to Bill Murray's recurring day in the movie), the race was a great deal of fun. Although only 4.4 miles, each loop had three aid stations with water & gatorade, as well as pretzels and pickles/pickle juice at the starting line aid station. Great swag as we received a nice hoodie and a very large medal, both with the race logo. Nice chili, cookies, and beer afterwards. The same race director as the Grand Rapids Marathon meant all the bases were covered. The tough conditions actually enhanced the race. All in all, a fun run that just happened to be a marathon.

So beautiful - love the loop-type course! (about: 2013)

LOVE this marathon! One of my all time favorites even though we ran through snow up to our knees, which made it even more fun, really! I love doing loops like that so you know exactly where the next aid station is coming up. I want to do this one again, and I think that with no snow, or little snow, some pretty fast times could be run on this course. Really, really beautiful! Volunteers were so friendly and awesome awards! Thanks so much race director, Don Kern and crew!

Fun small race! Packet pick-up really easy. Really cool swag including a hoodie. Several inches of snow made race difficult for this SC girl. The conditions were such that you knew you would have a slow time - it took the pressure off and you could simply enjoy the run and fellow participants. I was so glad when I received 3rd in my age group having my slowest time ever, 5:30 which is an hour off my average. There were only 3 participants in my age group. My husband ran the half. There was a shuttle to the race site but no shuttle back to your car. That would be our only complaint but that did bother me, my husband got the car. Overall a fun race.
