Driggs, Idaho turns out to host a community event that has at least 3 volunteers for each runner. I was one of 28 runners finishing the race. I hadn't planned on doing this race as I was signed up to do the Deseret Race in Salt Lake City, Utah the following weekend, and am trying to run marathons in the 50 states, so when I heard about the race on the radio I decided to sign up. This race has it all. The medal was made by the high school art class out of glazed ceramic. The age group top three placers had a choice of charities to donate their prize money to. I donated mine to a horse rescue. The town turned out for a festival in the park afterwards. The half-marathon had a respectable turnout, but I enjoyed the attention and relationships that the marathon runners shared. The Tetons to the east of Driggs made spectacular running companions as the cold sun rose. A red tailed hawk circled and cried. As the course twisted through farm fields a horseman joined me for part of the run with his grandson on his lap. If you like smaller runs where the runners are the heroes, this is a must.
