"Beautiful small town race." (about: 2017)

This is a beautiful small town race. Be prepared for the elevation (7000+ feet). All of the volunteers were very friendly. I enjoyed the hard packed dirt road. Temperatures were perfect. Nice medal and many runners ended up getting an age group award. Even though there were only 61 full marathoners, you seldom felt alone as the 1/2 marathoners were running the opposite direction. I would highly recommend this race. Ouray is a gorgeous town and would highly recommend taking a jeep tour after the race!

It rained all week before the race, and I overslept 20 minutes! However, the staff did a great job salvaging what they could out of it!

I am a flat lander from Georgia and ran this as part of my 50 states. If you like a small town marathon in a great location with great people, this is it. Never mind the few spectators, the course (though a bit tough) is mostly on dirt roads reducing the pounding on the joints, the support and water stops were just great!

If you come from flat lands though, you need to acclimate as you run in 7000-7700 feet of altitude and you will suck air. Nevertheless, I can highly recommend this one. Free beer at the finish, nice awards 3 deep in each age group and cool restaurants and pubs in Ouray make this a unforgettable event in my book.

"gorgeous scenery, wonderful marathon/half marathon" (about: 2013)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

I went with three of my friends, two of us ran the half marathon and the other two ran the full. It was my first half marathon ever and I dont think I could have chosen a better one to start iff my running carreer (post-high school running carreer). We planned a trip to Colorado and it was absolutely gorgeous! The elevation kind of kicked my butt, but I am not from Colorado, so I kind of expected that. I am so glad I chose this race as my first 'big race!' It was a small half/full marathon and there were not many spectators, the scenery was amazing and totally worth it! There were plenty of water/Gatorade/snack stations along the route and also a good amount of porta potties set up as well. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold. They did a nice job setting up this race and I definitely recommend running this race if you plan on running in the area!

Hills, Altitude, magnificent scenery; the essence of running; A transcendent run in the heart of the San Juan mountains. Just a flawless, extremely well organized event; great volunteers, perfect August weather, great Micro-brews, terrific food and some really fine folks make this a unique marathon experience.

This was the inaugural marathon so I was a bit apprehensive, but I was visiting Colorado and needed a marathon. I could not have made a better choice. The race was so beautiful, along several gravel roads with almost no vehicles. Zero spectators but aid stations had water and Gatorade which was all we needed. The altitude and heat were challenging. There were 46 of us in the marathon, with about 300 in the accompanying half marathon (they did the second half of the marathon, the downhill half). Both Ouray (you-ray) and Ridgway have lots of olde world bars and cafes and plentiful accommodation.
