| 1 Aspen Backcountry Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a very difficult race for those of us who don't train at altitude. I went in good shape but had to learn quickly how to physically manage the climbing. I slowed down and kept going steady. I ran the sections I could and kind of power hiked everything else. This worked. I was slow but I finished under the 8 hour deadline. There were 150 runners in the full and they were pretty much all mountain goats. This is an awesome race. Finishing it gave me a great sense of accomplishment. It pushed my upper envelope. That's why I chose it. This was the most beautiful course I've ever completed. Very cool experience but be prepared to work as hard as you can even if you're in good shape. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 For an inaugural race, this marathon was remarkably well organized. The field was capped to a small enough size that the trails were enjoyable. And, the race creators picked an incredible route. It was challenging, but not so much so that you couldn't enjoy the scenery and fresh mountain air. There weren't many spectators, but I still gave 5 Stars for that category because those that were out there (even other people out for their daily jog or bike ride) were super friendly and supportive. I saw on the website that they're planning on adding a relay: I really hope they don't. Part of what made this race so enjoyable was that it was just simply a marathon and that the trails weren't too crowded. |
