"Awesome Challenge" (about: 2012)

This race had some of the BEST volunteers and aid stations I've ever seen! The course was brutal (as I heard many runners, including ultra-runners say), but the volunteers and aid stations with gels, plenty of fluids, potatoes, and trail mix got us through. There were about 3 miles straight of 'hurdles' over fallen trees and steep inclines and declines (work your jumps, not just hills, before you do this race!). Keep in mind, it's out-and-back and out-and-back again, so that's 12 pretty tough miles. Yes, the section with the white rocks was tough on my feet as a previous runner commented, and this area in unshaded. Luckily, the reservoir is right there and there are clear spots to jump in or get a bit wet. I saw 4 deer and it was a lovely course. I wouldn't suggest it for your first half marathon or your first TRAIL marathon, but if you're looking for a great challenge and an incredibly supportive team of co-runners and volunteers, go for it!! Just to give you an idea- it took me an hour and 40 minutes longer than my street marathon time.

"Great Trail Marathon" (about: 2012)

This was a well organized trail marathon. The course was VERY well marked (someone used a lot of red plastic ribbon) & there was never a question of where to go. It was hot but I knew the weather forecast and tried to stay well hydrated. This was easy to do as there were plenty of very well stocked aid stations with GREAT volunteers, and they had my favorites-Heed & Coke. It was hilly as expected-with many roots & rocks to avoid, & logs to jump over-it IS a trail run & I love that (and appreciated the shade). A section of the course was along a white rock road, & although a flat area, it was challenging as white rock is unstable & it hurt my feet but that was only for a mile or so. There was 2 way traffice on the single track trail due to the different races & runner speedsthis did require stepping off the trail some to avoid crashing into others-it would be nice if this could be avoided-maybe a full loop instead of out/back with a small loop? We had to run the road over the dam but the traffic was well controlled by Police. The race shirt was good material and a nice design and the finishers medal was a unique wood circle with a metal center ring with the race info-nice. The race director responded to emails and was very accommodating-thank you James for a great race.

"Tough course, hot day" (about: 2011)

This race is basically an out-and back course (or maybe more accurately a figure 8 with a very elongated neck), on both sides of Eagle Creek reservoir. Marathoners do two laps. On the west side of the lake, the course is mostly pretty tough single-track, while the more heavily used trails on the east side of the lake are much easier to navigate. The heat magnified the difficulty of the course.

The race was generally well organized but started about 30 minutes late for no obvious reason. That's a real problem for a race in August during a heat wave. Aid station volunteers were great, but at least one station ran out of cups, and several volunteers expressed anxiety about their water supplies. I was only doing the half but wonder how the marathoners fared on lap 2. As you'd expect on a trail marathon, there's minimal crowd support, but the folks who turned out were very enthusiastic.

"Poor Race Organization" (about: 2011)

This could have been a good marathon, but the organization was just awful. First there were only 5 porta-potties for over 500 people. The race started over 20 minutes late. Then the other 3 other races started every 5 minutes thereafter, so the marathoners had to move aside on the single track trail for the front runners of those races. The aid stations only had warm water, no ice and to top it off the course was 28 miles! Needless to say I will never run another Planet Adventure Race!

Wow, can't believe I finished your awesome trail race. I had done one other Planet Adventure race near the Tippiecanoe Battlefield in IN in thick mud and rain that was hard, but this one was even worse. It was a hot humid day for this double loop course, that had constant ups, downs, roots, logs, stairs, single track, gravel road, sun, and some pretty views and Fabulous volunteers. Lots of Marathon Maniacs showed up as well as 50 States (both clubs I belong to) and it was cool to run with friends old and new.
The course was perfectly marked impossible to get lost. Lots of water was needed and it is advisable to bring your own bottle. The volunteers were tireless and always smiling, they spent ten plus hours out there for us. The race started a bit late, not sure why but it did not matter. There also was an early start though I don't recall if it was advertised much. It was amazing to see such strong, fearless and fast trail runners, I was almost immediately passed by the half, and 15K and had to continually give way to them on the turn around points, but it did not matter as I welcomed the excuse to stop. If you like trails come do a PA race, if you are somewhat experienced on trails I would think this race would be for you. Oh yeah the aid stations served boiled, salted and buttered potatoes! Cute medal on a rawhide cord made from a tree branch slice. I think this is there signature medal as it is like my previous medal. Nice job guys
