"Overall Great Marathon" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

The course was challenging, but it was great because the marathoners got to run with the half-marathoners during the first part of the race and then the marathoners split off to do an out-and-back.

The expo was great! My son was able to win a pair of brooks shoes for free! It's great to see kid interaction at a marathon expo and I hope to see this marathon continue it.

Spectators were great and most importantly I was able to see my wife and son at multiple spots on the course.

I loved that the medal showed off the arch and the st. louis cardinal. I appreciated this as a person going after running all 50 states. I would recommend this marathon for a Missouri Marathon

RnR races are always well organized and well supported. The course was challenging but provided some fun rolling hills along the way. The weather was perfect and the runners all seemed to have contagious excitment. The water stations were plentiful and the volunteers did a great job controlling traffic. The 7 miles in Forrest Park was the longest and most boring part of the course. The t-shirt was a quality Brooks short sleeve tee and the finisher's medal was nothing special but good quality. This was my first full marathon and I enjoyed every minute.

"Challenging but Scenic" (about: 2013)

This is overall quite a good event. It is harder than your avg marathon, but well organized. Apparently the course has changed every year since its 2011 inaugural, and the 2013 version featured a lot of rolling terrain. Be ready! The event's course profile looked pasted from mapmyrun and was somewhat inaccurate. Here's what to expect: first 1.2 miles is easy, then you begin 18 miles of gentle rolling hills-the biggest of which is an 81 ft climb from 11.6M to 12.6M. After a 52 ft climb/descent from 17.9 to 19.0, you have 2.7 miles of relative flat. Then you will find 4 more climbs before the finish, in particular a 59 footer from 24.2 to 24.9, and a final 28 footer from 25.8 to 26.1. Yeah, the final 100 meters is downhill. Wahoo! You will feel immensely satisfied. This is an honest man's marathon w/ 662 feet of climbing. If you are looking to pr, beware, and drive the course before racing it! The medal, expo, aid stations, and traffic control were all first rate. Apart from the final mile, fan support was sparse & that's the way I like it. Kudos to the city and the RnR group. Enjoy.

"Good Race" (about: 2013)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

My first marathon, but wanted to post. I think RnR did a great job with this race. It was a good/tough course. Second half was especially challenging including the uphill from 13-15. If I could change one thing, it would be the uphill for the final .2 miles. Nice tech shirt and a very good medal. Volunteers and fellow runners were very kind. Not many fans in the second half, but those present were chearing loud and had passion. I enjoyed the bands/DJ's on the course, good for an extra boost of energy. I was very satisfied with this race.

I ran the full in 2011, and I found it to be a pretty good race. There were a lot of spectators, the bands were good, and the course had some rolling hills, but nothing crazy.

For 2013, what a difference. Maybe it was because of the cooler weather or the World Series in town, but there were hardly any spectators at all. In the second half I spent miles and miles running virtually alone (the field dropped from 3,375 to 1,534 from '13 to '11) and no spectators.

The worst part were the downhills. They just shredded my legs. One in particular at about the 11 mile mark for like a half mile I really think did me in.

Also, it was very expensive. The shirt was OK, the medal kind of crappy.

I've run the spring-time St. Louis Go! Full once and that half three times. The Go! is better organized, cheaper, had a better course, and a better 'vibe'...more spectators (or at least some).

I will not be running this race again.

"Well Done" (about: 2013)

While there are elements of RNR races that I don't like, I must admit that the RNR races that I have run have been very well organized and St Louis was no exception. From the expo through the finish area, everything ran like clockwork. They served lemon-lime gatorade which is the way to go and had enough gel on the course. Good shirt and very good medal. Perfect weather, but I won't give them credit for that.
The course was difficult, but fair, and was a nice mix of downtown, neighborhood and park. My only complaint was the out and back around mile 21, but even that part was not too bad.
I ran with some of the nicest people that it has been my pleasure to meet at a marathon. They truely helped make the time go much faster.
While there were not throngs of spectators, the ones who were there were great. Special thanks to the crazy cowbell crew who seemed to be everywhere and never waivered in their enthusiasm. They belong in the spectator Hall of Fame.

Expo and race organization superb. Course aesthetics seem improved over last year. Spectators not numerous but decent in number and very supportive. After the half-marathoners break off, there were still enough marathoners to offer support to each other and keep it exciting. Course well planned with well placed aid stations, rock bands, and music. Although not steep, be prepared for rolling hills between 21.5 and 25.5.

"great run thru the city; hilly; music a joke" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

Not generally a fan of 'Rock n Roll' series events - I find them a bit overcrowded, impersonal, and expensive. This was my first time running the STL event, and I was pleasantly surprised! Weather was PERFECT for running, first half of the course was GREAT (nice tour of city neighborhoods), second half a bit boring, although the portion thru Forest Park was pretty, but repetitive. Overall, I thought the course design was very good, with MANY rolling hills. With a few exceptions, I found the hills to be a nice challenge and kept things interesting ... and most of the time, the course gives you a downhill portion to counter most of the climbs. Organization was adequate, which is all I ask for in a race, and I was actually surprised by the number of spectators on the course. I enjoyed the race and would run it again, but be prepared for numerous long rolling hills throughout the course - and a tough climb at mile 13-14. While I don't run races to listen to the bands playing, it did appear that half of the bands seemed to be 'on break' as I ran by ... not a big deal for me, but it seems a bit odd considering the music-theme of the race. Plenty of porta-pottys along the course, water stations well planned (very friendly volunteers!) NICE COURSE, CHALLENGING ROLLING HILLS, BEAUTIFUL WEATHER, BE PREPARED TO RUN SOLO IN SECOND HALF (majority of participants run the Half). I WOULD RUN THIS RACE AGAIN

"Lame" (about: 2012)

2 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon
COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

Horrible course lots of turns with no scenery other than a great view of the arch. Miles and miles of run down buildings showcasing an absolute dump of a city. The Forest Park section was nice but boring. Crowd support was non-existent in the second (marathon) half and entertainment was sparse after the half turn off. That said the course was not hilly at all. Maybe some inclines but nothing compared to KC and San Fran races.

The Rock n Roll theme was a joke. Lame (none of which were 'rock') cover bands that half the time weren't even playing.

Ugly, poorly designed finisher's medal and tech shirts. Wouldn't recommend this one to anyone. Wouldn't run it again even if it were free.

"great race which showcases St.Louis beautifully" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

The race was very well organized. The race course was beautiful beginning and ending with a spectacular view of the arch. The crowd support was the best of any marathon I've run. The race course was very hilly. St. Louis is a wonderful city full of great sports venues, Broadway plays, and wonderful downtown scenery.
