"An enjoyable Christmas holiday Marathon" (about: 2018)

50+ previous marathons | 1 Chiang Mai Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I flew into Chiangmai from Singapore on Friday afternoon before the Sunday Marathon, during the 2018 Christmas holiday period. On arrival, the Race Pack collection at Tha Phae Gate was smooth & well organised.

The Full Marathon was supposed to start at 4am on Sunday but was brought forward to 1am, due to runners' feedback on traffic & safety issues. There were also a record number of FM & HM runners that year. There was heavy security at the Tha Phae Gate Start Point with electronic gantry for FM runners. Night time temperature was 17-20°C & humidity 70%.

The course was mostly flat & on roadway. It looped around the Old City moat to run pass Chiangmai Hospital, the western side of the Airport, and cruised south to make 3 U-turns & one circus at the Zoo & Night Safari area before charting North & back to finish at the Tha Phae Gate.

Besides a girls' dance group at 28km & a lion dance at Start Point, cheer support was scarce in the middle of the night. Only a few distance markers were prominently displayed but water stations & first aid stations were regular. There were only three isotonic drinks stations & three banana fruit stations throughout the course. There was a health screening station, drinks stands & food stalls for a hearty breakfast at the finish point of the marathon.

Distance measurements were accurate for the FM which I ran in, but I was told that many runners charted only 9.4km in the "Mini Marathon" & many were ebullient with their PBs for the 10km run.

Despite its minor imperfections, I had a great time in Chiangmai running this marathon. The weather was perfect and Thai people were friendly, gracious & helpful. I made new friends & visited Doi Suthep on Saturday. I also had a recovery trek at Doi Inthanon National Park during Christmas after the marathon.

"Great atmosphere for an end of year run" (about: 2013)

I ran this event in 2013. It was well organised and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Staying in Chiang Mai before and after the event is great. One of the nicest parts of Thailand.

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't hit my target time as I felt I ran well. As per other comments the course distance may be inaccurate - at least it was per my Garmin.

This just means that I have to try harder in 2014. The early start, relatively flat course and cool conditions also make this a good event.

I'll be back to hit my target time and again enjoy the hospitality of the people of Chiang Mai.

Highly recommended.

"Pleasant but not exceptional" (about: 2013)

The highlights of this marathon are the chance to run for several hours in the dark as the marathon starts at 4am and the novelty of running in an Asian city. The race is reasonably well organised although better traffic control near the end would be nice as plastic cones are not quite enough to separate impatient drivers from tired runners and there was a distinct shortage of marshals. There were only 2 aid stations with sports drinks, the rest just had water but these were frequent. All in all, worth running once for the experience but I'm not sure I would go back.

The course is very flat and split between running in the city around the old city moat , then out on to the motorway for about 10-12 km , then back in to the city again , where it finishes where it began at Thapae Gate.
Not a great deal of support , but that is to be expected as the race is run at 05:00 in the morning.
Main bugbear for me was that on both occasions that I have ran this race , the distance has been 22.50km and not 21.1km as stated , so any thoughts of doing a PB here are slim to none.
I mentioned to the race organizers the distance discrepancy last year , the night before this Years race and was assured that it had been rectified for this Years event , but it wasn't , so was not best pleased, to say the least after the effort made to get a good time

"Great event and well organised." (about: 2011)

I ran this in 2011 on Christmas Day. I was already going to Chiang Mai for a holiday and when I found out there was going to be a marathon taking place during my stay I signed up straight away. The course is nice and flat it takes you out of the city centre and then back again, but can be lonely in places and the later runners will have to contend with oncoming traffic. It's nice running back into the bustling city centre. There are no hills or inclines to speak of and the course definitely has pb potential. The race starts early at either 4:30 or 5:30 in the morning which means that there are no crowds to begin with although there are some people who have been out all night and are now making their way home to cheer you on. As the sun rises and the moring arrives the crowds begin to appear. Organisation was fine I applied online and then picked my race number up at the expo without any problems. The expo is small but adequate. All in all this is a good, well organised race.
