"Small and beautiful race" (about: 2013)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Paso Robles Harvest Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

I loved this race! The course consists of rolling hills through beautiful vineyards, and the aid stations were well manned. The weather was perfectly cool and dry for most of the race. I set a PR by almost 30 minutes here, although the rolling hills are pretty taxing after mile 20 or so.

Pros:
-I have a strong preference for smaller races, and there were only 42 finishers in 2013.
-I really like the the short sleeve technical t-shirt that came with my entry fee. I would have liked a color other than white, though.
-The race was well organized.
-I received a number of free race photos.
-The few spectators I did encounter were very supportive. I don't pay much attention to spectator support, personally.

Cons:
-I finished towards the front of the race, and yet the person making tacos and/or burritos was out of food by the time I made it to the food station. Very surprising! Perhaps it would have been better to not offer any hot post-race food, after all.
-Sharing the road with car traffic was a little frustrating at times, though for the most part it didn't bother me too much.
-Particularly for the last 2-3 miles, the quality of the road was quite crummy and consequently a bit extra painful to run on.

Aside from the food issue, my 'cons' were pretty minor. Overall, I highly recommend this race for anyone wishing to run a small, scenic road marathon. I hope the race organizers continue to put this on for some time.

"Great small race..." (about: 2013)

Smallest BQ qualifier I ever ran, but everything was so good... Beautiful course, ran along grape harvest on small rolling hills, weather was perfect, everyone was super nice!
Most of the time I ran by myself, which I enjoyed as the scenery was so memorable and colorful.
It is not as hilly as SLO and u just need to enjoy the course, don't fight it, take in whatever the nature gives u.
The winery didn't open til 11 am, so most of the 5k and half runners already left. I waited for 30 mins and got free wine tasting at the host winery.
The free printout photos were so neat, they wireless connected and printed the 5x7 for free to pick up, and all photos are free to download from the host photo company web site. That alone already got me to go back there next year.
The town is so cute, saturday they have farmer's market at the town square, fun to walk around town the day before and tons of good restaurants to choose from.
Plenty of space to park during race day, and love their option of race day bib pickup.
U got to do this race, one of the best marathons I did.

"Amazing, with perfect weather." (about: 2012)

This was a well-organized, beautiful run. The rolling hills get to your legs, but the route was just what you'd want in wine country, nothing too steep, everything beautiful with some sweeping panorama views at points. Morning weather in Paso is cool and clear, but warms towards mid-day, and it's very dry. Small race, yet the post-race food was greatrecovery drink, breakfast burritos, bagels, fruit, the works, and NO LINES. (I guess that's what you get with 100 runners).

This was my second time running the marathon. The course is rolling, scenic country, hardly any traffic, great volunteers and staff. Everything as promised.
If you enjoy 'old school' running and a first-class event...check this one out.
I've run over 200 marathons and enjoy the spirit this event has. Thanks Julie

"Pure Running!" (about: 2010)

I have been running marathons for 20 years. This one reminded me of what the purity of the event should be. It featured a great course, genuine volunteers and a simple feel that let me enjoy my fellow runners and the event without the distractions of bands, ballons and the masses. We also got lucky with the weather!

I'll take Girl Scouts handing me my medal and Boy Scouts handing me water, along with locals, coffee cup in hand, standing in front of their houses cheering me along any day (over the staged junk that has come to pass as "entertainment" at the big-city events).

I'll be back!

"Friendly, well-supported run on rolling roads" (about: 2010)

Volunteers were very supportive and friendly. Management provided what they promised at aid stations. Country roads with some traffic, but not a problem for me. I would suggest making hotel reservations in advance. I had to drive 30 miles since I didn't reserve a room; I don't know why all of the hotels were booked... maybe wine-tasting. Great, small marathon with a good hill workout.

This was my 12th marathon and it was awesome. Great support including water, gels, and fans rooting you on throughout the race.
