"Rolling hills and GREAT volunteers!" (about: 2010)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Great Midwest Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 The start could have been earlier, especially because of the heat. I thought the water stops were great, and they tried to keep ice, but the heat was defeating that. I appreciated the volunteers in vehicles who made sure that the runners were okay with the heat. I hope to do this one again!

"A challenging, small race" (about: 2010)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Great Midwest Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 I agree that the people are very friendly. The race itself was tough; by the time all 60 people were finished with the race, it was literally 90+ degrees. In my opinion an earlier start would be better. The water stops were every 2 miles and the people at them were very nice. The course itself was very challenging with the rolling hills. I must also say that the organization was not very good... but it was the first annual. All in all, I would recommend this race.

"Another WI marathon by IL people.... Why?" (about: 2010)

| 1 Great Midwest Marathon
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 I am less enthusiastic than Kathy. Perhaps the low turnout and weather played into this. I agree that it is a tough course even on a cooler day. Perhaps a 6 a.m. start would have helped. I needed ice - not warm water - at water stations. What happened to the "every 2 miles" between water stations? I hope the half marathoners got better treatment when they finished. I was handed a $1 medal with a sticker face. No one offered water or ice. There might have been food, but I did not see any, nor was I directed toward anything. What I thought was a food area was for the results. I asked about the marathon results and the guy at the computer said, "We don't have any for the marathon yet." I left to get something cold to drink and some food. Maybe they will send me my age group award. It was very hot and humid, and I don't think the organization was prepared. Too bad for the participants and the volunteers. Maybe next time.

"TOUGH BUT REALLY GREAT!" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I just want to say thanks for a great race - I can't say enough about how friendly the people were. There is definitely something special about smaller-town races. The course was tough, which you did indeed let us know on your website, and I'm so glad I came. And I did read 91 degrees on the bank clock as I ran by, which makes me feel even more happy that I finished it. Thank you so much! |
