As a distance runner, what do you want?
1. Scenic course;
2. Plenty of aid stations;
3. Strong organization;
4. Fun destination;
5. Community support.
Loved this marathon. Can't understand why more runners haven't discovered it. Thunder Bay is easily accessible from the midwest and a beautiful place to visit. There are lots of race related family things to do, including a half, 10K and 5K races. The area offers many venues for sight-seeing and recreation. The local news station covers the race and a local radio station broadcast during it; I was listening a bit as I ran the race. The DJ was detailing road closures and course route, urging folks to get out and support the race, as well as to take care for the runners. Enjoyed fabulous restaurants before and after along with a very entertaining arts walk along the waterfront.
The course is no longer two loops, but goes all over Thunder Bay (which is was 2 cities until 1970, when they merged to become TB). The hills are minor, and you can take advantage of the downhills on the other side. Because the course is varied, you use different muscles, resulting in much less post marathon stiffness. Local runners very friendly, race officials quite responsive, volunteers spirited and dedicated. Really, give this marathon serious consideration.
The 'Giant' is a massive rock outcropping in the Bay. Located on Sibley Peninsula, it resembles a giant lying on its back when viewed from the area at the start/finish of the races.
Canadians voted it one of the Seven Wonders of Canada; it is worth the trip to see it.

This marathon is underrated! I was disappointed that for a beautiful and scenic course, the participation was low. It's a challenging course but an attractive one! If you are looking for a marathon course with some gentle rolling hills in the latter part of the race, this is your marathon!! I will absolutely run it again!! The half marathon is an ideal event in preparation for Twins city marathon or Chicago marathon!! Go and check it out!!

So happy to finish this full marathon. At times I worried I was lost. Will be better prepared next time. I ran in the 2010 and 2011 half marathons. It is wonderful to be able to participate!

My favorite marathon. Great support from volunteers. Lack of competition was actually a bonus as it was easier to get sport drink and run my own pace and not get stuck behind people. Very fun. Beautiful city.

The 13.1 mile course is excellent. Doing the course twice is nice because there is a greater concentration of spectators and your family/friends don't have to drive around too much to do their spectating. You get to high five your running friends. There are hills but they are little. Great scenery and excellent volunteer support. Friendly city! I did my PB here. It's a small marathon, so they actually put the medal on you, you're a somebody. I did 3:17 and came in 7th place! I would have been 5th place if the Kenyans weren't there. I actually got to meet the folks from Kenya which was an honour. Anyways, I highly recommend it, it's my 8th marathon, and it's my favourite one so far.

Ran the half. Fun, challenging course. Nice scenery around the lake. Only negative was that the full course was the half course twice. Will do this race again.
