"Hardest marathon" (about: 2014)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Catalina Eco Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

I have completed 6 marathons in 4:10-4:20. The eco marathon took 6:57. The hills and the heat are indescribable. So incredibly difficult. Only true determination will get you through. You must bring all your own food! No gels were provided- only m&m's, gummi bears & pretzels, water & Gatorade. They need a gel sponsor! Also the catalina crush drink - whatever that is? It's promised on mile 19 and no where to be found.
The course is very very very hilly. Beware and enjoy the island! P.s. love the buffalo!!

"Good race; tough for a 1st time trail run" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Catalina Eco Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This was my 10th marathon, but 1st trail marathon. The first 3 miles seemed straight uphill, and steep uphill at that! I almost decided to turn back at mile 7 and call it quits. But the middle third of the course was much more tolerable. The last third was more nasty hills and steep, rocky downhill trails. Funny, I was cussing and thinking 'I have no business being here - never should have signed up!' Then I found out I finished 3rd in my age group and suddenly felt much better. Everything is relative, I guess. Views of the sea were spectacular - saw one bison running a great distance away - nifty. People were friendly, calm, excellent in all ways. Modest but well-placed and reliable aid stations. Avalon is a touristy but fun little town to visit. Putting aside my weakling grousing and lack of trail preparation, this is a great marathon in a lovely spot.

"A well organized challenging course" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Catalina Eco Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Ran the race in 2012. The weather was perfect, aid station plentiful, and excellent organization. The race picked us up by taxi from the ferry landing and drove us to the start. The big challenge is you must like hills. The start and finish have sections where you are going uphill for 3+ miles without a break. Don't look for a PR performance here.

"The course was even more beautiful than I imagined" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Catalina Eco Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

The course in Catalina was more beautiful than what I had originally imagined, the view was spectacular, the water station was conveniently located near the runners, and the spectators were wonderful; but the organization was what I was most pleased about. I was so pleased that you can count on me to be there next year!
