"I enjoyed running the Rock-n-River Marathon !" (about: 2012)

For my 34th marathon I signed up to run in Reno and the start under the Reno Arch was GREAT!

We stayed at Harrah's which was very close to the start and finish and so my wife, who didn't run, could easily watch me start and finish too!

The course was run along the river and it was beautiful and very well monitored. It had two out and back portions and while there were few spectators on the course, the ones that were there were enthusiastic!

The weather was GREAT with cool temperatures for most of the race!

It was an enjoyable event for me and I will most likely do it again next year!

"Pretty run, not the best organized marathon" (about: 2012)

Start with the good - the course is somewhat scenic running along the Truckee river. It is not very crowded, except for miles 9-13 where you combine with racers from the half, 10k and 5k.

The bad - unfortunately there is a lot more for this race. Had the hardest time finding anything about this race. Marathonguide.com was the only listing for several months as the primary web site was offline for awhile. An email to the director went unanswered, although he did answer his phone when I tried him several weeks later. The web site was lacking almost any useable information...no course map, nothing about spectators, no previous years results, nothing about number of participants, etc. About 1 month prior, a race map was unloaded in a format that wasn't very useable and it turned out that it was wrong. It showed a single 13 mile out and back repeated twice. Turns out we ran another 13 mile out and back east along the river. Not great for getting spectators in position.

The expo was a little odd. It was in Scheels and there wasn't much of an expo that I saw, just get your bib upstairs and your t-shirt downstairs. The schwag bag had an odwalla bar and a t-shirt. The shirt is a nice technical one, but the graphics are single color and a little boring. While on schwag, the medal was average to below average and doesn't indicate which race you ran (half or full).

Spectators were almost non-existent and very little cheering from the few that were there. There were maybe 4 or 5 bands along the route, but only 1 or 2 actually were playing. The second half featured Reno's most prevalent demographic - the homeless. They actually cheered the most of anyone.

The water stops were fairly frequent. No gatorade on the second half at all, but you could get bananas, oranges, gu, and water at almost all of them. Vols were very nice.

At the finish, you could get apples, oranges, and bananas. To drink there was water, honest tea, and coconut water. The tea and coconut water are not what I wanted at all. Overall, probably the worst post race I've seen in 20 marathons.

The course itself is flat and would be fast if not for the 4500 foot elevation. The run was enjoyable, but nothing else about this marathon set it above average.

There were 4000 runners for all the races, but only about 140 in the full. It seems to be geared toward the shorter races.

Good to knock out a Nevada marathon if you're closer to N Nevada, but don't have high expectations other than to have a pretty run along the Truckee River. With just a little attention to the web site and a little more logistical support, this marathon could be above average easily.

"Scenic, well organized small marathon" (about: 2012)

I ran the marathon this morning. May 6, 2012
Pro - very pretty race along the Truckee river,
well marked, well organized, 40 degree start warming to the 50's
If you stay in Reno it is very convenient.
Con - the website did not have the marathon map.
There are very few spectators. The port o potties are sparse. Very poorly advertised. Most of the runners do the half.
This was my 26th marathon and I ran it so I could let runners know if it is a good one to do in NV.
I would suggest it if you don't mind a small marathon. I would do it again but I live in Reno.

Really enjoyed running this race, the weather was perfect and coming from the south the dry cool air was refreshing. The course and scenery were interesting and mostly followed the river with only a few tight areas. The crowd support was small and mostly concentrated around the downtown. The aid stations were very well stocked and the volunteers were helpful. Could not ask for anything more.

What a beautiful route: Next to the Truckee River, on a path nearly the entire time. Beautiful views of the snow covered Sierra Mountains.

The support is fantastic. Actually, they had more water stops than needed, the BEST tasting oranges I've had, GU, bananas, and lots of friendly smiles.

Loved the medal. Good shirt.

And all of this for only $50. Best value in a marathon I've ever done!

"The Good, the Bad, the Ugly" (about: 2011)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Reno's Rock-n-River Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Just ran this marathon yesterday. Here's what I think.
The Good: Best stocked aid stations hands down. Fruit, energy bars, pretzels, water and gatorade at nearly every station, nearly every mile. The volunteers were great and encouraging. The finishers medal one of the better one's. The first half of the marathon course was not bad (more on the course in a moment.) Tech shirt is fair.
The Bad: The course was very odd. Out and back one way (13.1), out and back in a different direction. Twice I was a bit confused as to where to go. I was not the only one. At one point runners cut across some grass from one path to another, I never saw any arrows pointing us in that direction it just seemed to be what everyone was doing. Maybe I just didn't see it, but I never saw a finishers clock at the finish line that displayed time. If I missed it then this is not in the bad category, but I've never missed one before, but it's possible. I was just glad to have finished.
The Ugly: I've run large and small marathons and I have no preference when it comes to large or small crowds, but the second half of the out and back was painstakingly lonely and the scenery was bland. Very, very bland. Finally, and this was a real killer, there were mile markings on the trail in chalk. There were also mile markings at aid stations that did not correspond to the one's on the trail. At one point I hit the trail marking for mile 25, two hundred meters later I get to the aid station that has a 25 mile marker there. I asked the volunteer which was correct, he said the aid station was, at which point another volunteer pointed about 30 feet past the aid station to another marker that said 25. Three 25 mile markers. And that wasn't the only mile marker where there more than one. That is just UGLY!
Overall, not a bad marathon, just not a great marathon. If you're running Nevada this wouldn't be a bad choice and the marathon choices don't seem plentiful in the great state of Nevada.

"Nice, well-organized race" (about: 2009)

The volunteers for this race were fantastic, especially the ROTC and armed forces volunteers in the second half of the marathon. They were very supportive, and ready with anything the runners needed. The course has its attractive parts, with most of the course along or near the Truckee River. There was not a lot of runners or spectators or community involvement, but the race is still new, so that may change in time. I get the sense that the organizers are on the right track.

"Something Different in Nevada" (about: 2009)

I'm a 50-stater doing this as state 22. The race was well organized, with enthusiastic volunteers and water stops plentifully supplied. The course went past the famous arch quickly, and spent 90% of the time on a pretty river path. If you are looking for big crowds, this is not your race. If you are looking for a quiet run along a river path with a few cheering volunteers at each water station, this could be your race. It's a good start for what hopefully will become a great 50-state option for Nevada.

P.S. My one suggestion would be for the course setter to check the mile marker placements. They were often set wrongly and it screwed one up when checking pace. On a positive note, many thanks go to the army volunteers managing the second half of the course. They were wildly enthusiastic and a great spirit-lifter.

The volunteers were awesome and very supportive! We had water, Gatorade and fruit offered to us at each 1-mile marker, along with encouragement and cheers. The bathrooms provided were just at the perfect spots. I can't wait to run the race again next year (although at this moment I am happy that it is a year away, LOL).
