"Great Experince for first time marathon" (about: 2011)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first ever marathon and I have nothing to compare it too, but it was overall a great Experience. Fist of all I finished, second in under 4 hours and third in good shape. The course was fairly hilly, but not more so than my training routes. I liked the overall route, even though the couple of steeper hills halfway did bite a little. The water stations were spaced out nicely and the cheering sections did a nice job: The one around the 12 mile mark I could hear a few miles out. There weren't a whole lot of spectators, but I commend those that were out since it ended up a cold cloudy day and they were very cheerful. Police was out in force and did a great job of handling traffic.

I did not care for the choice of flavor of the gels, but I did try them the week before and decided to carry my own.

I've already decided to run another this spring and thinking of running High Point again in the fall.

This was my first NC marathon. The hills, though advertised as challenging, were not as bad as one would think (they never are!). They were rolling, but overall it was fine. I actually had a PR in this. Plenty of organization before and after the race, and the goody bag had plenty in it. I had hoped for more of a technical running shirt, rather than cotton. Plus the choice in color (black), and the fact that its long-sleeve makes that shirt one that I won't be wearing during summer months. Overall, I enjoyed it and will definitely come back. Not much crowd support, but that can be expected as the race goes WAY out into the more rural areas. The ones that were there were quite cheerful and helped you along. Police did great job not getting us run over, too. Good job!!

This was a fun course where there weren't a ton of spectators, but the ones who were there were awesome. This was my first marathon where I had some dehydration issues. The post-race medical tent was fantastic and had me on my way very quickly. The volunteers along the course were very encouraging, and the police personnel were superb. I strongly recommend this race if you like a rolling course (like I do) where everyone is friendly. The prizes for the top 3 finishers were fantastic... thanks!

"Much smaller race than I anticipated." (about: 2010)

I think this race had potential to be much larger in 2010, but the date of the race was wrong on multiple websites, causing lots of runner miscommunication and trust with the race committee. Also promised a few months ago was the availability of pacers to help us runners reach our race goals. I missed qualifying for Boston by less than 2 minutes and had very little motivation and support on the course. I think for 2011 I will wait to see if pace groups will be offered and see if the race date is accurate before I pay my dues. Overall, not a bad effort by the race committee, just a lot of miscommunication to the runners like myself who ran.

"Hilly!!!!!" (about: 2010)

The hills definitely affected my result - I think by at least 10 minutes - and my quads are very sore.

The organization and volunteers were great, and much of the course was nice to look at - but hilly, especially what felt like the two or three big hills in the last fou miles.

This was my first marathon in High Point. The organization was perfect - especially the police support. Some of them were even cheering us on. It was a very great event in a great venue. I highly recommend Sumela Deli on Main St. - awesome Greek and Italian food.

This was my second marathon and I felt it was a wonderful course with challenging long hills throughout. The day reached the 70's so between that and my bad intake of fluids I struggled. Thankfully the aid stations became more frequent (mile) after the 20 mile mark and I was able to rehydrate. Great water stations, great volunteers, great townspeople turnout, great goody bag, great cold wet paper towel at the finish.
I would certainly do the race again but may opt for a new more local to me alternative next year.

Yes, the lines to the porta-potties were a little long at the start, but if you're creative, this shouldn't be too much of a problem. The course is quite interesting, with lots of long, gradual hills, and at least one short, steep one. After you leave downtown High Point, it becomes very rural, very quickly. Out in the country the roads were open, but there was very little traffic. Plenty of free beer at the end made for a very enjoyable morning out. It would've been nice if age-group prizes went more than one deep, but overall, I'm psyched to finally have a good marathon in the Triad.

"Nice run, a little hilly" (about: 2009)

I ran the marathon with B.J. and would say exactly the same. I enjoyed the course, which was moderately hilly. Nothing extreme, but a lot of long, gentle uphills and downhills - there were very few truly flat sections of the course. I enjoyed running through pretty neighborhoods and past/through the scenic campus of High Point University. For a first-time visitor to the town, the race really took you around it, from downtown, through residential areas, by the university, and out into farmland after 10 miles or so. I liked the size of the field, which was enough that we were never running alone, but after a few miles weren't too crowded. The plastic cups were a bit annoying (I had one crack and spill Gatorade on me as I ran and tried to drink) but the aid stations were well stocked with water, Gatorade, and energy gels - and the volunteers were great! I would perhaps suggest a few more porta-potties at the start. I didn't encounter a line, but it looked like a pretty big one had formed for the 15 or so toilets about 15 minutes before the gun. Overall, though, a great race! I would definitely run it again in the future.

This was a great marathon. It was my second and there were hills, but a lot was downhill, especially in the first half. The big overpass hill was a surprise at mile 23, but other than that, the course was reasonable for central NC. The volunteers were AMAZING and the support of the High Point Police was outstanding. Great aid stations, and we ran several beautiful and peaceful miles out in the country. I had a lot of fun and highly recommend this marathon. They do need more porta-potties at the start - like 3 or 4 times as many.
