"Bring a friend and a support group!" (about: 2011)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 This was my fourth marathon, but due to poor health in the months prior to running, it might as well have been my first. The run was very hilly; it was primarily flat and up hill for the first 21 or so miles. The weather and the run were beautiful; people running we so friendly, too. Water stations were ample. Here's the bad: There was no crowd support. I could have sworn, too, that I read aid stations would have Gu or fruit or something solid. Low, they did not, and I did not prepare for that. The Red Cross had to help out my race partner and me around mile 20 because we both ran out of the food we packed; our stomachs were eating themselves, and we were getting close to quitting. The bus drop was a half mile from the actual start line, something not really mentioned until that morning. I would run this again, though, just not for a few years. When I do go back, to thwart the possible lack of food, spectator support, and cold water, I will bring some friends so that I may have those three things during the race. Run it with an open mind!

"Marathon without shirt." (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I have completed 34 marathons and this is my first marathon that I don't get a shirt as advertised. I registered on Friday May 27th and was told that it will be mailed. Three months and multiple emails later, no reply from the race organizer and still no shirt! I used this marathon as a training race because it is not a flat course. If you are looking for a fast marathon and crowd support, this one is not for you.

"Good marathon with room to improve" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
| 3 Stillwater Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 Overall, this is a good race. The course is hilly, of course. What do you expect from Stillwater? The organization is fair. Others that call it excellent I would disagree with. I have run it all three years and I have a few things that I would like to see improved. First, the bag drop is completely unsupervised. Drop your bag in a pile and pick it up at the end. There is nobody around to ensure you get the right bag or to help you if you need help. Second, the official results were posted by chip time. Any serious runner knows you don't do that. And when it costs you an age group award by just a few seconds when the other runner comes in behind you, it hurts. Third, the water stops were inconsistent. It was advertised that powerade was first and water was second, but not all water stops worked that way. Also, I think they had different cups for powerade and water, but again, there was no consistency from one water stop to the next. The other reviews are dead on with the spectators, there are none! If you need them, run a different race. As I said earlier, this is a very good race, but there is room for improvement and I hope the race director takes notice one of these years so he can make a good race great!

"Stillwater runs...deep" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Ran the 2011 Stillwater. It had perfect conditions - 54 degrees with 50% humidity - for a late May race. It's hilly, not Leadville Marathon hilly, but in two of the worst spots - mile 13 and 19-20. But if you can get over those the last 4 miles are all downhill. If you are first time marathoner, I wouldn't recommend this one for you. Not that the hills were that tough, it was that there wasn't any real support crowd; I was thanking the mailboxes on Hwy 95 for coming out. Great organization of the race and I could not complain about any of the water stops. All-in-all, it's not a must-do marathon every year, but if you are from the five state area, it's one of the best orgzanized. The hills weren't anything that would stop me from doing it again.

"Small, beautiful spring race" (about: 2011)
2 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 When I ran Stillwater, there were only 244 total racers. Despite the small field, however, the organization was perfectly smooth. Not surprisingly, there wasn't a great deal of crowd support, but I appreciated the race's somewhat remote quality. The course itself is lush and serene. As others have noted, it's somewhat hilly (particularly for a Midwest race); but to me the hills (combined with the generally verdant, semi-rural setting) made this one of the more interesting courses I've run. I hope to come back for the 20-miler.

"hot, humid and hilly" (about: 2010)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I liked it. I have run 17 marathons so far. Water and stuff should have been colder. I train for hills, so they didn't kill me. I never did get my official time.

"Good organization, hilly, and warm." (about: 2010)
2 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Pros: race organization, friendly fans, variety of "neighborhoods" (a little town, fields, near the state prison, golf course, etc), water stops (VERY well organized), finish line food, and PR (my 2nd full). Cons: heat, hills (hillier than the map makes it look), lots of cars on last 6-mile stretch.

"Hard race, many hills, not particularly scenic." (about: 2010)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Stillwater Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Hardest of the 27 races I have run. A tad warm and loads of hills. Might be good if there were some way to make the course take in more river views or more historic streets. Pleasant start and finish. But a lot of highway in between. Nice finish by the river in Lowell Park - brats and a free beer at any of 14 spots in town. Changing tent would be nice. I splashed off in the cool, clear waters of the St. Croix River.

"Great time at the 12K" (about: 2010)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I ran the 12K and absolutely loved it! It was my first time running a race and I've already signed up for another one. Weather was perfect, course was great, and there were lots of people there to cheer us on. I only saw 1 mile marker during my run, but maybe I just missed them. Thank you to Stillwater for such a wonderful experience!
