"A great race in a quaint beach town" (about: 2023)

For those looking to add South America while running a small-town race, this is the one. Pacasmayo is a 1 hour flight plus 1 1/2 hour drive north of Lima, and famous for its surfing community. Pre-race communication with the race director was personal, and he answered all my questions about the race and the town.

More than 600 mostly Peruvians come from all over the country to this multi-race event (5k, 10k, 21k, 42k). It starts with a very active packet pickup right at the start line and steps from the Pacific Ocean, followed by a Pasta Dinner that serves as a local fundraiser. Both were outstanding. And the town/beach were fun to walk around and experience some amazing fresh seafood for lunch.

I stayed at a beach hotel just 150 meters from the start, which was energetic for at least 20 minutes prior to the gun. Being mixed in with 5k-21k'ers, the start is fast, so its good to chill for the first 3-5 miles.

The course is a 20 mile T out-and-back to the north, followed by a 6 mile out-and back loop to the south. Those first 20 miles are relatively flat, with splashes of beauty - but relatively 'desert-like' in appearance. Spectators were far and few between, but excited to see you. Volunteers at aid stations were AWESOME!

The last 6 miles are the best. 3 miles along the boardwalk and then unspoiled oceanfront, with 3 miles back up a bit higher for a view of the beach and lighthouse. Finish is exciting, with hundreds of other race finishers and their families cheering you on. The race medal is made locally out of marble - very unique!

Overall, a good event.

Great event with 100% local spectator support in some of the tiniest villages in Peru!!!

Perfect weather (always in Peru) and great course markings for a route that was very creative and took us through villages, coastal areas, and the beach front in Pacasmayo, twice. There was always an aid station within a few miles, replete with great food and cheering volunteers!

While 30-40% of this marathon may have been on asphalt, the other gravel, dirt, sand portions made it truly unique, never boring and always fun to run.

And, starting all 4 races (5K, 10K, 21K, 42K) at the same time worked out great and kept people of different runs on the same course for even more support as they completed their out portion and turned around to head back to the start/finish line.

Everyone's local stone carving medallion was beautiful and gave us a chance to see the artists at work in Peru.

Walking as a parade of runners through town the evening before was brilliant, allowing us to form camaraderie between runners and locals, and all of the townspeople were cheering and enjoying the dancers and music that accompanied us. Nice job.

Thanks to all of the course organizers, volunteers and spectators, this was a great run full of good news around every corner.
