"No 2010 edition as of 5/2010 :(" (about: 2009)

Very challenging, hilly course (in beautiful fall weather) with only several aid stations, though put on by a first-rate race director and organization. Alas, it appears that they'll have only a 20K and a 50K in 2010. I found the Frankenstein Marathon to be very challenging, given the nonstop hills, few spectators, and few aid stations. Not every mile is marked, so it was definitely a marathon for your GPS. I thought it was a very humbling run, and I run to increase my humility, so I will miss this one very much. My deepest gratitude to those who organized the 2008-09 editions!

"Friendly, Well Organized, Small Race" (about: 2009)

When I read about a marathon/50K on Halloween weekend in Frankenstein, MO - less than two hours from my house - I knew that was the place to attempt my first ultra marathon. After reading prior comments, I knew this would be a great race - and it was. Very well organized, excellent aid stations, a feast of food at the end, and some of the nicest people I have ever met. Course was every bit as hilly as it sounds, but knowing that in advance allowed me to lower my time expectation going in and just enjoy a nice, scenic 50K run/walk on a beautiful fall day. Would definitely recommend this race to anyone. For a small race, there were a number of 50-state marathoners and Marathon Maniacs, so it is definitely worth traveling to.

"Great small marathon!" (about: 2008)

This was my fourth marathon and my husband's first. The race is small (I think it had fewer than 200), but great for those who like to get away from the crowds of the big-city marathons. Aid stations were well stocked - even with food like pretzels and gummy bears - and the after-race food was great. The course is hilly, but there are some beautiful views throughout the whole thing. This is the second race I've done with St. Louis Ultrarunners group, and I would recommend a race done by them to anyone.

"Great People, Great Scenery, Challenging" (about: 2008)

The people made this race one of my favorites. The race director, the organizational staff and the participants were awesome. I hope to see them at another ultra. The course is challenging, with many hills, but beautiful fall colors. There aren't a great deal of spectators, but the scenery and participants' friendliness make up for it. It isn't a closed course, so leave your headphones at home and be safe.

"Great, Low-Key, Fall Race" (about: 2008)

This was a very enjoyable, fall race in a very scenic part of Missouri. The race is a hilly loop course on state highways. It runs through the town of Frankenstein, Bonnets Mill, and Linn. It finishes back in Frankenstein at the community ballpark where it started. Because it's on old state highways, the roads are a bit chewed up and sloped in places so you have to pick your spots on where to run. Fortunately, there was very little traffic until you got close to the town of Linn, then the traffic picked up some, but not too much problem. There are a lot of hills on this course. Some are long and some are steep, but all of them are runnable. Driving the course and reading other runners comments was more intimidating than actually running it.

Don't let the hills deter you from entering because the scenery is spectacular and the aid stations were superb. The fall colors of the race and rolling hills gave you something to enjoy. The aid stations were well stocked and great, cheerful volunteers. However, if you are looking for a race with a lot of spectators and fanfare, this is not the race for you. There were probably on about 10 spectators along the entire course. On the other hand, this would be a good race for friends and family to support you along the course; there were plenty of places to pull off and get out and cheer.

In addition, I had more conversations with other runners during the run than I have during any other marathons, so the participants were all in great spirits as well. When the race was over, the after-race spread was very good, with hot dogs, pizza, subs and sandwiches, and several finger foods. I can see this race becoming bigger in a couple of years as word gets out, but I believe there is a limit of 200 runners, probably because the Frankenstein Community Ballpark is a very small venue. I would definitely suggest this race... even for a first-time marathoner. Just know that in your training you should sprinkle in a few hills and lower your time expectation because I would guess most people will have dramatically slower marathon times.

"Great Fall Race With Little Fanfare" (about: 2008)

This was a great, low-key race. A lot of hills, but all of them are runnable. Driving the course was more intimidating than running it. The two best parts of the race were the scenery and aid stations. One of the most scenic courses, especially during the first half of the race near Bonnetts Mill with super fall colors. The aid stations had very friendly supporters and stocked with great stuff. I really enjoyed the Coke and pretzels. There were only a handful of spectators, but would be a good race for friends and family to follow you along the course. It's on old country roads, so some the roads are sloped and angled and therefore you have to pick your spots on where to run. The after-race spread was great, with hot dogs, pizza, sub sandwiches, baked beans, etc. Probably fewer than 100 runners. I think this race will grow over the next few years, but the venue at the community ballpark is not large, so that's probably why there is a low entry limit. Bottom line is that this is a good race and don't let the hills deter you from entering. The views and food make it very much worthwhile.

"Challenging, but a fantastic race." (about: 2008)

If you are looking for running at its purest, with a challenging course and run among some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, then this is the race for you. The hills will kick your butt (there are at least 16 hills, with 4 of them having 5% inclines) but the beauty of the Missouri landscape will make it all worthwhile.

The event (there is also a 50K run as well) only has about 100 runners, so it is you and the road. The volunteers are fantastic and supportive every step of the race. Anything I needed, they were there for. And at the finish, a uber-kewl medallion for the marathon. I did not stay for the after-race festivities, as I had a long road trip back to Atlanta. My legs are sore, but my spirit is soaring. Not my fastest run, but I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for the SLUGS for a great race.

I live 6 miles from Frankenstein so knew the course and the hills. Heh heh, if you run the hills daily, they aren't a problem. Great volunteers, well planned race, all-in-all, a great first time event for a county who's residents still watch me run as if I'm from Mars.

What an amazing race! The course was difficult, but that was very clearly presented by the race directors before the race. The beauty of the course and the ideal weather definitely kept me going, as did the great volunteers. The spectators were small in number, but large in spirit. I would definitely run this race again. I almost hope word doesn't get out about how great a race it was, as the small field of runners (61) definitely created a sense of camaraderie. All in all, I thank David and Victoria White for putting on a first-class event!

Fantastic vistas, brutal hills, great aid stations, and friendly local folks. What more could you ask for?
