"Well organized, beautiful scenery." (about: 2012)

Very well organized race. Deceptively difficult race with tough, rocky footing in many sections. Not as much elevation change as many trail races, but very tough rocky areas. My only request would be to start an hour earlier (7AM instead of 8AM).

"This is a beautiful trail marathon" (about: 2011)

Packet pick up was easy (the day before), but it would have been nice to have maps to the start available. I know most of the runners were locals, but I came from out of town and had to spend a fair bit of time on line the night before the race clarifying WHERE to go to start - unnecessary stress!

Nice start area with building open to wait inside, plenty of bathrooms, and a drinking fountain.

Lovely course, almost all single track, techinical in some spots, beautiful views. Though I run trails all the time, I still managed to stumble frequently and fall (hard) once - watch your footing! I witnessed at least five other falls, and saw numerous scraped up folks on the course.

Few (one?) mile markers along the way, GPS highly advised if you want to know where you are.

Not a PR course, took me about an hour longer than my last road marathon, and I live at high altitude, so that was not a factor in my slower time.

Finish area was nice, cool wash cloths handed to finishers were a nice touch. Post-race food was okay (snacky stuff), not the pizza I read about in years past.

Nice group of fellow runners. Sparse spectators, of course, given lack of accessibility - that's what makes the trail nice, and does not detract from the race at all as long as you are not planning on cheering masses to keep you going.

Loved the gummi bears at the aid stations, my new favorite running snack!

My GPS read 25.1 miles when I crossed the finish - was I the only one who found the course short?

Look at the elevation map and prepare accordingly. There is a long (4 mile-ish) uphill before the descent at the end, and even the 'downhill last 6 miles' has a few climbs. Train on hills, be ready for hills, love hills.

Tshirt is nice, fit is a little funny, but I am always happy with a tech shirt.

Overall, Park City is a nice place to visit, and this is a well-run trail marathon and a good event. I would run this race again.

"Very difficult trail" (about: 2010)

Because of some rain just days before, the trail had plenty of rocks to contend with, but the roots were the cause of my one fall and countless near-falls. Falls from roots sent my running partner for x-rays on her hand after the race! This was marathon #7 for me, and by FAR it was the most difficult. We trained on hills, so they didn't impact me as much as I thought they would. I truly wish I would have trained much more on trails. Great organization, and we appreciated the fact that they waited (and waited and waited) for us to finish.

"Great trail; course needs port-a-potties" (about: 2010)

This was my first trail marathon, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. The course was great. Quite a bit of uphill, but after about mile 22, it was pretty much all downhill. It was a good mix of up and down.

Now, just to be fair I am going to address the negatives.

Bathrooms
They claimed to have bathrooms at mile 16, but I couldn't find one. That is 26.2 miles without a single bathroom. For the females of the race, my heart goes out to you.

Starting blocks
If you plan on having a decent time at all, you need to walk your way to the front of the start because it is almost impossible to pass people - especially at the beginning of the race. It gets better in the second half, but it's still very hard to pass people.

Post-marathon food
Post marathon food wasn't that great, but this is a smaller marathon, so I wasn't expecting much.

Spectators
I was surprised that there definitely were some spectators along the way because I wasn't expecting any. I wouldn't run this race for the crowd support.

Mile markers
Also, not very many mile markers (in fact only one that I saw). There was one at 10 miles and then you have to know when the stops are or ask someone at the stops because otherwise you won't know. It actually wasn't that big of a deal because I felt like I was just jogging during an afternoon hike rather than running a true marathon.

Experience
I have to admit that after running several city marathons, this one was fun. I didn't even listen to music, which is a first for me. It was nice just to enjoy the run and look at several of the amazing views.

Stations
All of the stop stations had plenty of gels, Gatorade and water. Some even had fruit, which was great.

T-shirts
On a smaller note, if you aren't one of the first 300 to register, you don't get a shirt, which sucks because this is a challenging marathon and I kind of wanted a shirt after my hard work. Also:

Face-plants
I full-on face planted at least three times that I can remember, so you might want to try practicing graceful stumbles before doing this marathon.

Overall
All in all, a great change-up from all-pavement city marathons, and some breathtaking views. It felt like more of an accomplishment than a regular road marathon. Thanks to all of the volunteers and organizers. Great overall event with some great trails and beautiful views.

"awesome" (about: 2009)

This was marathon #10 for me, and it was by far the best and the slowest. Those who put on the race knew what they were doing and were able to direct those of us who didn't.

Great organization. Awesome trail. Difficult race, but well worth the pain.

No need for fans in a race like this, although at the end the fans and support staff were top-notch.

"AMAZING trail!" (about: 2009)

This trail is so beautiful and amazing that I only felt lucky to live so close to be able to run 26-plus miles continuously on this type of pristine single-track. The Mountain Trails Foundation does a fabulous job organizing this event and taking great care of the trails throughout the year. Although I have no marathon experience to compare this to, I heard that this is a very tough marathon, with the middle being the hardest part. Go out nice and easy, saving your energy for what is to come. There are many rocks that tire your feet, leaving you a perfect target for a face plant. (I saw many, and almost did a few myself.) Pick up your feet and watch the trail all of the time. Not many places for spectators. There were quite a few times throughout the race where I was running alone. Take time to stop for the nice views from above. It's AWEsome!

I have run a couple of trail races, and this one was by far the most fun ever - with the best scenery! If running the Triple Trail Challenge, you are given a awesome jacket. Many, many compliments!!!! And delicious pizza!!!!!

This is a great marathon. It is on a beautiful course and is well run. They do a great job of providing aid stations, even in inaccessible locations, and the volunteers are very friendly. Not many spectators, of course, but you run this marathon for the mountains, not for the people. No extreme climbs, but the course is hilly throughout, so plan accordingly. The trail is also very rocky in sections, so wear good shoes. The finish area has a very festive atmosphere with pizza, beer, massages, music, etc. And the top 3 finishers receive a homemade pie - can't beat that! I highly recommend this race to anyone who wants a great trail marathon.

I'm a road runner, have done 10+ marathons, and decided the MMM would be a good training run for Portland in October. My intention was to run 20 miles (my training plan), then hike the final 6, and, unlike most training runs, finish by receiving a t-shirt, pizza, and beer.

As this was a training run for me, I let the fast runners go out first and I started easy. The first mile was on road which allowed things to sort out and I was able to find a good niche. I had a great time chatting with the runners in my cohort. Everybody stumbled on a root or rock now and then or even scraped a shin or palm, but overall the course was fantastic.

GOING OUT EASY MADE ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE. The most difficult part of the course is in the second half. Knowing that I intended to stop at mile 20 and walk the rest, I maintained the heart to push up the long hill from about mile 15 to 20 (check the map for specific elevation profiles). At the top I took a break, rehydrated, and decided to run down to the finish. My time was only 30 minutes over my PB road time, but I felt better than I have ever felt at the end of a marathon.

I ran Portland a month later, but realized that the highlight of my 2007 season had been at the MMM. I will return to this marathon!

The scenery, trail conditions and volunteers made this the BEST mountain trail run of all! Thanks to everyone who participated - it brings us all a spectacular 8,000' run to remember forever.
