"The new course is tough but beautiful!" (about: 2007)

The Kennebecasis Valley Marathon is the only marathon I have done every year since its' inception. 4 years in the running, I love this marathon. The headwinds and the unrelenting hills added a challenge to the new course, which is absolutely beautiful as it rolls through one community to another, ending in the stately town of Rothesay. As a race director for 2 large races on PEI, The Fulton Campbell Half Marathon and the Fall Frolic, I have a good working knowledge of what goes into organizing a run. John Kelly and his crew do a top notch job in putting together the KVC. Each year the race grows in popularity despite the fact it is held smack dab in the middle of marathon season. The marathon relay challenge is a great way to attract half marathoners...an ever increasing population of runners. Thank you for taking such good care of the PEI girls this year...especially to Bill McQuire and the 'Coast Tire Man' who drove my jeep to the race finish. The owners and employees at Shadow Lawn Inn were extremely obliging to us as well. The post marathon meal was homey and yummy as always. George Kelly's smiling face was a sight for sore eyes (and feet!) at the end of the run! Living proof that attitude is everything. Thanks again John and crew! God willing, I'll be back next year...Kim Bailey

"First marathon but not the last" (about: 2006)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The 2006 KV Challenge was the event I decided to use as my introduction to marathoning and I couldn't have picked a more suitable race. The organization of this event was second to none and the support along the route exceptional. The first half is quite hilly but the last 10K are flat. I plan on running this again in 2007 and recruiting others to do so as well. Well done!!

I have run this course for the third time, very scenic thru first 20 miles, hilly first half but rolling hills after, very flat last 6 miles. Orgnization is second to none, prepare properly and you can do well on this course, I was able to qualify for boston, highly recommend this course.

Wonderful small-town marathon (likely under 100 runners). This is a one-way race that runs between Hampton, N.B. to Saint John, N.B. (Canada) along the Darlings Lake and Kennebecasis River. Best bang for the buck on the Eastern Seaboard at $40. You get more than $40 in goodies and food plus the fall foliage, scenery, wonderful support. Do yourself a favour and come up and check this event out.

Not one to run the same marathon twice, I plan to run the KVC for the third time this fall. The passion and heart that goes into organizing this fast growing single event is palpable. The volunteer based committee keeps costs low and outcomes high. My hat is off to John Kelly and crew for seeding, growing and cultivating this marathon. It is a rural marathon so don't expect the crowds of spectators. Those that make it to the sidelines, however, are full of spirit and pride. Best bang for your buck going. Beautiful area. Check it out... now!!!

"cold and rainy, but very nice course, organized" (about: 2005)

The race was in October and it turned out to be a very cold and rainy day. Temperatures dropped from around +7C to just above freezing and there was heavy rain all morning. A lot of people wore garbage bags to keep in some heat. I am told that 22 people dropped out in the last 10 KM or so (there were only around 100 of us). I saw several people being treated for hypothermia at the finish line. The cruelest part is that the last 5 KM or so constitute a long stretch with very little cover from the wind, and that stretch is lined with fast food restaurants (I almost didn't make it past Dairy Queen)! The rest of the course is very pretty and I plan to try again this year, weather permitting. Definitely earned the T-shirt.

This was my first marathon. A buddy and I paced ourselves nice and easy because there were lots of hills. The weather certainly did not cooperate but the volunteers who helped out were great. It was wet, cold and windy and they weren't running to keep warm but they would always be ready with a drink of Gatorade or water and their words of encouragement. The end stretch was painful but we got her done. I'm going to go back next year just for the nice jacket and to try to beat my time.

This race is a well kept secret but will likely grow as word gets out. It was my 17th marathon, and the weather was hideous - pouring rain from start to finish - but no marks lost for that. (Note to self: Bring rain gear next time.)

The course is tough - rolling hills throughout except for a fairly flat finish. The first half offers some stunning vistas of the beautiful Kennebecasis Valley. Then a stretch through the leafy Victorian opulence of Rothesay, one of Canada's wealthiest suburbs. Then a flat stretch down a long commercial drag to end in downtown St. John. Organization was outstanding - from the shuttle buses, to the hastily erected army tents at the rain soaked start, to the bicycle pacers and amazing freebies (nice shirt and jacket); all for $30 Canadian. Volunteers were great, piling layers of blankets on the hypothermic finishers, handing out plastic garbage bags to wear along the way. Don't expect crowds of spectators - this is a rural marathon. But I give full marks to those who did show up in the pouring rain. This is a real runner's race.

By the way, St. John (pop. 120,000) has 2 marathons; NYC only has 1. Says a lot about the vibrant St. John running community. Congratulations to the race organizers and all you other rain soaked hypothermic finishers. Great race. Just 1 suggestion: kilometer (as opposed to mile) markers would be nice.
