"The privilege to run in the Easter Island" (about: 2012)

This was my tenth marathon and the smallest field of all previous ones. This is a 'boutique marathon' the course is challenging yet gorgeous, through the middle of the island. No moais on route, who cares? the panoramic are awesome and there are plenty of moais around the coast. Gatorade and water stations every 5K. Pretty postrun party with rapanui dancers and good mood.
Exotic destination marathon that´s worth to run it.

"Tiny, friendly, hilly marathon" (about: 2009)

I had a great time doing this marathon - it's a tough, hilly course, and the conditions aren't ideal, as it's in the middle of wet season (it's quite warm by the 10 a.m. start time, and it can get really windy). But in terms of overall experience, it's amazing. You run from the only town on the island to a beach on the other side, and back. You might not run past moais (although you pass some fake ones and get a glimpse of some at the turnaround), but it's still stunningly beautiful with rolling hills; shady, forest parts; horses; and a vast expanse of ocean. Plus I think everyone has the same package whether you go through MarathonTours or directly through Olimpo, so you stay at the same hotels and get to know the other runners, which makes for very friendly race atmosphere. There are drink stations with water and Gatorade every 5K, which double as the KM markers. The other events are a sprint triathlon on the Friday (some people turned it into an Olympic distance triathlon), mountain bike race on Saturday, boat race for locals on Saturday afternoon and the running events on Sunday. They give out medals to the top three in each age category for each event, so there's plenty to go around!

"Hilly but worth doing" (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Easter Island Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

RACE: One of four marathons held in Chile, information, including past results, can be found at www.olimpo.cl High flight costs mean only a few Chileans run this marathon on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the majority of runners are part of a US tour group (website on header) or other tourists. Although winter with its 10am start expect conditions from very strong sun to overcast and light or heavy rain. This marathon has been held for the past 5 years all with relatively low numbers; 2002(6); 03(45); 04(43); 05(27); 2006(25). For finish times note that in 2003 previous runners reported very hot and humid conditions, whilst conditions in 2006 were cool, darkly overcast with rain at the start. There is no cut-off time and some walk the course, everyone gets a finishers medal.

COURSE: Ignore all PR and commercial pictures, you will NOT be running past either statues (maoi) or other historic sites, the paved route can be dull. This is a hilly out and back course across the centre of the island on the only paved road, with an accumulative climb of ~380m. Since 2006 the race starts at the local soccer field (use of gym for facilities) on the town's harbour front, which does have a couple of tourist-maois. Once out of the island's only town, the course has undulating hills with an overall slow steady incline reaching an elevation of ~200m at around 17km. The un-shaded road then rapidly descends with a few turns down to the opposite coast to the beach turn-around point. Then it is a steady gruelling slog back up to a 200m elevation over a ~4km distance; relief comes in the remainder of the return course with its undulating, shaded hills and gradual decline back down to the harbour front. There are no toilet facilities enroute; water (small cups) and Gatorade stops are every 5km. Slow runners may find only ground level marker arrows for directions back through the town to the finish line.

OTHER: The pasta party is 2 nights before the race. All the races, ½ marathon, 10K and local children's 5k, all start at the same time. There is only liquid (no food) at the finish line. The running races are part of a 3-day event starting with a sprint triathlon and then a mountain bike race. Age awards for all three events are presented in the local town gym the evening after the marathon (no awards for the overall winners of individual events). The overall male and female winner of all three events (points system) are awarded the title of King and Queen of Rapa Nui.

"Tough, but well worth it" (about: 2004)

I did the marathon through marathon tours and enjoyed every minute of it. The people on the tour were absolutely amazing. The marathon itself is really just a small part of the Easter Island experience. They had water, sports drink and Powerbars each 5km.... the tough part was from mile 10 the beautiful 3 mile downhill run to the beach turnaround point, and then you have to come back up the bloody hill! Crowds were basically nonexistent (unless you count the cows and horses) - also not much shade - but a great one to tick off the South American part of the 'Seven Continents'.

If you want to run an exotic marathon, this is the place to go. The course is tough (hilly), and doesn't offer all the comforts many of us are used to in the US (no energy drinks, a 5K gap between water stops, etc). Those aren't bad things though... as long as you set your expectations. I think that the organizers did a good job for a newer, small marathon (a little less than 50 full marathoners).
Notes about my ratings: Course: tough, but scenic. Organization: I personally think they did a good job. Spectators: hey, it is a small island with a small population... this isn't Boston.

Overall, I am very glad I ran this marathon. A great adventure!

Great place for an event. 2003 was still working out the kinks of a new marathon. Marathon Tours is the only way to do it!
