The marathon of the locks is a really nice small (564 finishers in 2014) marathon in the Department of Mayenne in France. The city of Laval is the host of the marathon and is quite a lovely city with the Maayenne River dominating the city and the old town and Chateau well worth visiting. The expo is really only for bib pick up with a few booths for the charity (to benefit cystic fibrosis) and a sports supplement. The pasta dinner was at a local restaurant and was sparcely attended although the food was great. There is a shuttle the morning of the marathon that takes the runners to the town of Mayenne where the race begins. The course begins with two loops through Mayenne and then goes onto a dirt path beside the river. The path is narrow but the footing is excellent. The scenery is pleasant with fields and woods and even though it was a sunny day and the race ran south, there was enough shade to prevent overheating. The finish in Laval was subdued but good. The spectators were few and far between but enthusiastic shouting 'allez' and 'bon courage.' The water stops were every 2.5 miles or so and there were dried fruits and cakes along with water and a sports drink. They gave out sponges at the bib pickup and had buckets to dip them in on the course. If you didn't bring your sponge you were out of luck. The finishers medal and t shirt weren't the best, featuring a rather silly logo. Laval is between Normandy and the Loire valley and is a great destination marathon if you are visiting those areas and want a low key race to complete your holiday. It is not Paris or Medoc but it is a flat and fast course with great ambiance.
