"Moved the date 3 weeks later!" (about: 2018)

Disgracefull that they moved the date of marathon 3 weeks ahead so late!

People from Europe are planning to come a year before!

Not everything is wasted - 3 weeks in South America!

I ran the half marathon.
This is easily the most beautiful marathon in Brazil. Certainly one of the best in the world.
You run through the most famous beaches in Rio (Barra, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo and Flamengo).
Organization is improving it each year (I ran the half marathon in 2014).
It's notable how they're getting inspiration from great marathons worldwide. Expo is very nice (the sports sponsor Olimpikus created a special shoe edition for this marathon!), there're some entertaining here and there (small orchestra of children, piano players, etc).
Crowd support is very little, but honest. Children from Vidigal slum waiting for a hi-5, some cheering on strategic places.
I didn't have any problems with water supply, although I heard from some people there were problems.
Course is mostly flat except for a bridge on 21k and a 2k-long hill around 28k.
It can get really warm, but this year was ok (compared to Rio's average).

"Poor Organization" (about: 2016)

The course views are outstanding but the organization leaves a lot to be desired. Timing chips not working and lack of water at a number of stops. Lots of runners had timing chip issues and the race officials refuse to entertain their concerns.

I lived in Rio for 2 years and ran this marathon twice. Both years, the race was managed well from packet pick-up to start line and finish. The race is usually held in July which is winter-time. So weather is unpredictable. If travelling to this race, be sure and pack gear for heat or light cool rain. Use a driver or rental car (or bus) to get to the start line. Its less hassle in the early a.m. Can get a cab at the finish line to retrieve your car later. Remember to run with some money for cab rides, coco water, a meal, etc. There are very few spectators but may have to side-step pedestrians in Copacabana as they get to and from the beach. I'd do this race again. Maybe take a few weeks to see all the city has to offer. That would be a great way to taper before the race!

Fun marathon, pretty long bus ride to start but beautiful corse. Props for the Gatorade and water support. Pretty easy run lots of spectators toward the end. Worth the trip

The good

- Fabulous course, one of the best. Beach views nearly the whole way, and you take in some of the great sights of Rio, including Ipanema, Copacabana, and the views of Sugar Loaf through Botafogo.
- Good organization, no issues with entry or packet pickup
- Nice wide streets, not too crowded, traffic free course
- Adequate water and gatorade
- Good finish line atmosphere
- Great finishers medal

Could be better/beware:

- Start is a long way from central Rio. Make sure you have transport arranged. Taxis not necessarily easily available.
- In 2013 it was hot, sunny, and there is little shade on the course. Be prepared.
- No real spectator support until you hit the final part of the race through Ipanema/Copacobana.
- Deceiving course - very scenic, but lots of long straight sections that are quite monotonous.
- Through the busy areas of Ipanema/Copacobana may have to share the course with non-runners
- Race program and some race emails not translated into English. There were English speakers to assist at packet pick-up though.
- Limited options for race tshirts/merchandise, if that's your thing.

Overall a good event, I'm glad i did it and would recommend it, don't think i will do it again though.

"breathtaking in every sense of the word" (about: 2013)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Rio Marathon

Ran Rio in 2013. First 13 miles is one straight line following the coast. Never seen so many mile markers go by with my head turned to the right just soaking it in. Stunning scenery. Be prepared for no shade and very little turns, for a hot race but not humid. Then get in town for the last 6 miles and pinch yourself. Ipanema, Copacabana... Water stops are good, little water containers you poke a hole in, and little gatorade pouches. Plenty of them especially after the half way point. No Corals so be there early! Buses to the start are very well organized from Rio. can't go wrong.

I thought this race was wonderful and together with the Great Ocean Road Marathon in Australia and Big Sur Marathon in USA it should be considered one of the must- do marathons for any runner who enjoys coastal scenery. The course follows a string of long and beautiful beaches and it is stunning eye candy all the way. It was certainly hot this year and I started slower than usual to make allowance for the heat and blazing sunshine, but that meant I had more time to look around, and yes, Rio must be the world's most beautiful city. The organisation was good and the drinks stations were reliable and frequent. FYI the Rondonia Palace Hotel and Augustos Paysandu are very convenient for the startline buses, and anything near Largo do Machado area means you have plenty of food choice before the race and easy access to the start/ finish.

"An unfortable event" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rio Marathon

I traveled to Rio de Janeiro from Los Angeles to run Rio Marathon. It is well worth the efforts and I enjoyed the entire trip.
The route was along the beach almost all the time. It was beautify scenic route.
July is a winter time for Rio. However, it was still a very hot sunny day for running marathon this year. I saw 38 degree Celsius reading along the way.
The event is relative small in comparing the major city Marathon in the States. The event is well organized. There are some notable excellent ideas I have seen only in this marathon:
(1) The water stations supplied mineral water in sealed cups. The cups like the typical yogurt cups. This enables the runners to carry the water miles before finish drinking the water.
(2) The Gatorade are supplied with sealed bags. A bag of the drink can last much longer than a regular cup.
(3) Divided shared road. A good section of the road was shared with other runners/walkers/bikers. A clear division ensure the safety on both sides.

"Great Course with Stunning Views" (about: 2013)

1 previous marathon | 1 Rio Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I have been living in Rio de Janeiro for the last couple of years, and decided to do my first marathon. Last year, I did the 1/2 and it was cold and wet. This year it was hot, 31 C which made for a difficult second half as the day got warmer. The course is great, you have beautiful ocean views almost the whole way through. The organization was also good, although a few problems. For example, they ran out of gatorade at one of the stops, although the assistants insisted there was more up front. Also, they provide free massages at the end, but they shut down rather early as the therapists had a heavy crowd from the 1/2 marathon. However, if you are in it for spectacular views and a flat run, it's a great course.
