"Great event." (about: 2010)

I love the Perth Marathon - the course is flat and fast and really scenic, and the event has a wonderful "feel" to it. I did the marathon relay this year, having run the marathon twice before (and my PB is still on this course).

You won't get a lot of crowd support, but the growth in the relay event means there are always people out there cheering you on. It also has a homey feel to it; is always well run and is generally an excellent event. And $40 is cheap too.

There are not too many big marathons where you can just roll up, dump your stuff and run the race.

"Not impressed at all" (about: 2009)

I have run the Perth Marathon 4 times and I have to say that the 2009 edition was the worst that I have experienced. Anyone who has been dedicated enough to do the pre-training and then focus enough to actually finish a marathon deserves more than what was served up on Sunday the 5th of July. Whether you were someone who was one of the front-runners, or someone who just wants to finish, it was inconceivable to understand why there were no medallions available to those who finished towards the end of the field. For those runners who have at times struggled just to have finished, it is the ultimate reward just to hear your name called out and as you run through the finish line to have a ribbon put around your neck. This year this was not the case. I only found out when I questioned someone who told me that they had run out of medals and were trying to get medals off of members so they could give them to others. I was eventually told that they would be posted out (after I had asked several people, most of whom were not interested in helping me). Very disappointing, to say the least. Not professional at all.

This was my fourth Perth Marathon, and far and away the best so far. Perfect conditions showing Perth at its best. Again, a small entry field - roughly 500 - but that adds to the charm of the event. Great food at the finish for competitors, and overall a well-organized, perfect day.

I did this marathon while visiting relatives. The course is very flat but is really, really scenic, as you follow the River Swan and pass the WACA cricket ground.

The course, which is an out-and-back one, was really well marshaled and the whole event was very well organized.

The spectators were a bit thin on the ground but it is run very early on a Sunday morning.

Well done, Perth, and I will certainly do this marathon again.

"Well organized and scenic course - a must!!" (about: 2005)

A great course with KM markers (out-and-back, flat course) that takes in the beautiful views of Perth's Swan River foreshore. There are regular drink stations and carbo shots are available free before the race.

As the run is on a path shared by bikes and walkers, there are plenty of people to cheer you on and most bikes politely move aside for you.

The food at the end is fantastic and it is impressive to have the MC call your name as you cross the line.

Loved this run - will be back to do it again.

"Flat course, fantastic organization" (about: 2005)

A small marathon (277 runners) held entirely on bicycle track/pavement along the beautiful Swan River. It is out & back, starting from Burswood Casino to Attadale & back. The course is about 99% flat with only a couple of road crossings (after the golf course & Canning) and one tiny hill in Applecross. Drinks stations are available every 2.5K. Fantastic & professional organization by WAMC. The downsides were: 1) thin crowd support, almost spectator-less; 2) KM 15-30 were on concrete pavement; 3) the cycle path was also shared by cyclists & pedestrians. Overall, I would recommend the Perth Marathon, especially if you are looking for a small event and a flat course.

I finished the Perth Marathon last Sunday. The results are available at the wamc.org.au website. It was good. The start/finish was in a car park beside the river near the casino. I parked the car beside the river looking across to the city. The route was upriver, across the river, back down and across the river again, and then out and back along the southern bank on a flat, dual-use, tarmac footpath. It was traffic-free (many cyclists stayed away from it on the morning of the marathon), with a few undulations. The weather was good: about 12 degrees at the 7:30 start, just after dawn. Conditions were calm until just before majestic point near halfway, when the wind blew up and the rain came down (it lasted only a few minutes). You could taste the saltwater. Photographers had a field day, as it was mostly partly cloudy with sunny spells. One guy took photos near 5K, with grass between him and the runners, then the river, and then the city buildings in the background.

Water stations were good. Runners could leave their own drinks the day before, and they were set up at whatever station the runners wanted. I had 3 bottles: one at 10, 20, and 30K. One helper at 20K even picked up my bottle after I had thrown it to the side and stood it up at the edge of the path so I could pick it up on the return. The last 5K were tough, as you could see the casino at the finish, but it didn't appear to get any nearer until about 1-2K from the finish.

Each finisher received a medallion, with a certificate and photograph to be posted out later. There were generous prizes, with a medallion for first place in each 5-year age category from 18 up, and special awards for those who had finished 10, 15, and 25 Perth Marathons. Each one had his or her photo taken. The compeer at the start welcomed runners from outside the city, from interstate and from over seas, saying that there were runners from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Scotland (presumably the guy named Macbeth!). Each of the category winners had their photo taken, as did the relay teams.

There was a good atmosphere at the finish area, with free massage, tea, coffee, bananas, and hot dogs, and with people sitting out on chairs and having picnics, overlooking the river. There were good spot prizes, as well. Spectators were few and far between, but people passing by gave encouragement. As it is winter here, the weather is a hit and miss affair, but we were lucky. It was a good, low-key, well-marshaled, scenic marathon, a nice change from the likes of London, Paris, Amsterdam, Boston, and Dublin.

"Worth the trip." (about: 2000)

A well organized and very friendly race in a beautiful part of Australia. The course is extremely flat, but is run mainly on cycle tracks along the Swan River. Run in July, it can be a gamble with the weather. When I ran in 2000, it was very windy on the outward leg of the course (out and back), with a torrential downpour in the first 2 miles. Support is almost non-existent, with many of the residents of Perth not even aware the race was being run. That said, it is well organized, with an enthusiastic race club hosting the event. Would recommend it to anyone planning to visit the area.
