A Runner from Tuebingen, Germany (5/12/02)
The Usedom marathon is a border crossing marathon, and it even crossed borders back in the old communist days. The start is on the beach promenade, the Polish part of the Island Usedom in the city of Swinouscie, and the marathon runs along the whole island, ending in the mainland town of Wolgast. It is a rather small marathon (about 150 participants), but well and enthusiastically organized (transport from Wolgast to the start included).
Though beautiful, the route itself not very suitable for record attempts, mostly asphalt, but also shorter slightly hilly forest tracks, and well marked. Often it runs by the sea, with winds from seaside, and also along beach promenades with many people walking in your way, but no problems with motorized traffic. Though, there are not too many spectators, except at the start and the finish. There were enough filling posts.
