"Best Food of any Race!!!" (about: 2010)

Have you ever seen bright sunshine at 4 AM? Well, you could at this race!
Please note, I did the HALF....
This race is fun, friendly, northern, and completely awesome. It starts at night, with the times set so that you'll finish around midnight (i.e. full mar starts first, walkers start earlier, 10 km starts nearer midnight)
The entire community seems involved in this race. This is definitely the most friendly race I've done - I high-fived every single person on course, and got 5 on-course HUGS from other runners.
It never got dark during the night. The sun did dip briefly below the horizon, but popped back up in a bit.
But most importantly, there was homemade soup at the finish line!!! Oh yay, don't you always wish for hot delicious soup at the finish line?
And the next morning, don't be late for the buffet breakfast/awards ceremony the next day. It has EVERYTHING you wanted to eat, post-run: eggs, sweets, muffins, champagne punch, fruit, meats, juice, coffee - YUM! Plus, every runner gets their name mentioned at the event.
What a fantastic event!

Wow! Course is OK - nothing special to see in Mayo! But it's a great experience to start a race at midnight in the middle of nowhere and not in the dark at all! I was surprised to see almost 200 runners there! Excellent traffic control (if there was traffic!). Very nice, technical, long-sleeve shirt.

There were few minor things I would improve: more details on the website (maps of the course and Mayo). I had hard time finding the place to get my bib and shirt before the race. Also, more KM markers (at every KM, please). Ohh and hot water in the showers would be nice next year!

I would recommend this race to anyone who is looking for something different!!

"A great community that serves pie for breakfast" (about: 2007)

I live in the Yukon and we love going to this marathon because it's a true community event where half the town participates and the other half volunteers. The course can be lonely and dark (the sun does go down for a few hours), but it's flat. Because it's an out-and-back on the only road to Mayo, you won't get lost, but you might see the fabled Mayo running ghost. This marathon is a small, fun event that nearly anyone could place in (my first year I placed last in my category... but I ALSO came second). I go for the home-cooked buffet breakfast, if nothing else.

A beautiful place! This race involves the entire city in shorter races, a 10K, a 1/2 marathon, and the marathon... It seemed like everyone from Mayo was out for this midnight event; lots of kids, too!

The highlights:
Watching the moon come out
The calm and quiet on the course
Chocolate at the water stops
Gorgeous handpainted kilometer markers in the shape of moose
Homecooked banquet/breakfast
Everyone gets his/her name announced at the awards ceremony!

The run became somewhat monotonous in the dark, and the chip-seal is hard on the legs. Very few spectators, but lots of volunteers/car patrols who braved the cold and stayed out until who knows what time in the morning to ensure everyone got home safely; no bear casualties. It was nice not to be staring at somebody's back the entire race, as sometimes happens in larger events.

This trip made a great running vacation, along with the Dawson City Dome Run and the Yukon River Trail (Whitehorse).

Overall: great organization, a unique experience and I gained an amazing sense of being part of the community thanks to my host family. Thanks also to the other families of Mayo; my 2-night stay turned into 5 nights (it was awesome canoeing, swimming, playing soccer and hiking with you).

"You should have seen me just around midnight" (about: 2002)

Starting a race at midnight or just before sunset is unique. The organization of this event is great with no detail overlooked. They even provide bear patrol. Running a marathon in twlight is a surreal experience. Although there were only 18 marathon finishers, the 1/2 marathon and 10k runners/walkers, plus the other marathoners on the out and back course, left little time to get lonely out in the woods. How many other places can you be done with your marathon at 3:00 am? Save room for the cheesecake at brunch!
