"Great course, top notch organization" (about: 2014)

What a great event! The organization was first class, from packet pick up to leaving the track at the end of the race. The required French medical certification is taken care of online as part of the application process which gets any of those concerns out of the way before you travel. The course is a double loop but with plenty of variety. I enjoyed the first 10km the most which starts, just after a fireworks display, outside the walls of the medieval city, runs quickly out into the countryside, through a couple of small villages then along a dirt trail that winds around the marshes and the bay before leading you back to Vannes and the small bustling harbour area. The regional delicacies mentioned below were available again this year, presenting an intriguing option if you are not attempting a PR. For me, the crepes at the village of Arcal went down the best. What a fun and noisy the Arcal were, dressed this year in blue from head to toe as Smurfs! I was also lucky enough to receive the furthest travelled marathoner gift this year that the village sponsors and which was truly special.

The course is not flat with quite a few inclines here and there but likely not a problem if you have done some hill training. It would be a stretch to call this course hilly. Temperatures this year were in the 60s throughout, perhaps a perfect compromise for runners and spectators. Vannes may not be an obvious destination marathon choice but my wife and I very much enjoyed the town and Breton hospitality at the wonderful hotels and restaurants. Many people, but not everyone, speak excellent English. A little French goes a very long way and its well worth the effort learning or brushing up whatever you can. I think I enjoyed getting my not so good French into shape as much as my legs and cardio for the months leading up to the marathon.

The marathon is excellent value at around $50 which includes a very nice, well-designed medal and tech t-shirt. Im struggling to find things not to like about this marathon and highly recommend it, especially if you are travelling from outside of France and looking for something a little different.

"Beautiful route, amazing people" (about: 2012)

My lovely spouse chose Vannes as the ideal location for my first marathon. It had all the right markers for a spectacular race. A beautiful location, an interesting ... almost exotic route (at least for a Canadian), and a relatively small number of runners. Vannes did not disappoint.

I had the additional honour of receiving an award from the village Arcal, a beautiful spot along the route with a VERY enthusiastic bunch of spectators, for having traveled the furthest to run the race. Truly unique.

All in all, this was an amazing experience and an excellent, well organized event. Highly recommended.

"Oysters and cider!!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The 2003 Marathon de Vannes turned into an eco-challenge with wind, heavy rain and cold temps during the last half of the marathon. If you like varied running surfaces, then this is your race. Dirt farm roads, walking trails, cobblestones, brick and asphalt awaits the adventurous runner. Despite almost 3,000 runners, this race has a small-town feel to it. Where else could you get hard cider, raw oysters and grilled sausages at the water stops?? This is a great destination race. Vannes is lovely with its half-timbered buildings and seafaring tradition. Very picturesque with the race starting outside the fortified walls of the town. The organizers and volunteers really care about making this race first rate. Splurge and stay at the Hotel Villa Kerasy, and for amazing seafood, eat at the Cafe Mingus. You won't forget this race.
