I loved this race but they ran out of medals (about: 2013)

The course was really nice. There were more water stations than any other marathon I have ever run. The race director was very nice. The only problem was that they ran out of medals for both the half and full marathon and said they would mail one but it has been more than a month and it has not arrived.

Wonderful Volunteers on a T-storm Day (about: 2012)

The marathon staff at the expo was seriously concerned about cancelling the marathon due to tornado activity a few miles away in OK and KS. They went ahead and had it and I was amazed that so many volunteers showed up and gave out water while torrential rains came down from the 3rd hour onward. There were few fans except for volunteers and relay runners, but I gave spectators a 5 because of their enthusiasm and because it was a very humid/rainy day.

Water stations seemed to be about 1200 meters apart. The only thing I would change is to add a 'next water stop is 2.x miles away at the waters stops before 12M and the one at 14M in both directions. I imagine that many runners like myself were skipping waters stops and found themselves stuck between these two stops.

Things you might want to know: This is the hilliest urban non-trail marathon that I've ever done. Hogeye refers to a town in AR where the marathon originally went and not to the Razorbacks. Some of the trail feels more like sidewalk than asphalt, so be prepared for some pounding.

Nice Job Fayetteville! (about: 2012)

There were more drink stops in this race than in any marathon I have ever run in. I learned some lessons in topography, meteorology and psychology with this one! The beginning of the race tends to be down hill the end of the race tends to be uphill. Better leave some mojo for that. Very pretty course. Organizers can be very proud of that. People were very friendly...someone gave my buddy a rain jacket when it started to rain...people were kind to cheer even when the weather seem about ready to go south on us.

LOTS OF WATER AND DIRECTIONS GREAT! (about: 2012)

I ran this course once before and they did not have enough water. This time it was great! Had water, Gatorade, and even a few beers. It was fantastic, volunteers helped stop traffic, show you which way to go. Everyone was so helpful and friendly! Great Job! putting this on this year! Much Better! Thanks!

I am from Fayetteville and have run the Hogeye Half lots of times. This year was my first full, and it was hot (~72 at 7:30 am, ~85 at 11:30), sunny, and windy. The course is tough with a good many hills, but it runs along a nice trail system that is great. There were at least 3 aid stations that were out of water when I got to them and all they had was super-concentrated Gatorade (yuck!). There was also a LONG stretch without stations between the Botanical Gardens and the dam at Lake Fayetteville. With the heat and lack of water, dehydration was very common (including me). I love this race in my hometown, but ya gotta have more water available. Help me here, TABBY!

Not impressed (about: 2011)

know I should find nice things to say before blasting this race, but unfortunately I can't.

1. The entry fee to get an oversized shirt and NOTHING else was not worth it.

2. The course was not well marked at certain places. The lack of organization at the relay stops was ridiculous, clueless relay runners in the middle of the course without any idea that marathoners were coming through.

3. Food at the end was minimal at best.

4. But the absolute worst part: lack of chip timing and understanding of the finishing rules. The woman who finished second - according to the posted marathon results - only ran the half marathon, though she signed up for the full. I coaxed the race director into verifying this - which she did - and determined I was correct. Then, the woman who had been running in second place collapsed before finishing. Fire Dept personnel put her on a stretcher and wheeled her across the line. The race director awarded her with the 3rd place overall. Not so fast - you can't be assisted across the line and be awarded a place finish. After numerous emails to the race director pointing out the rules of USATF certified courses, she modified the results.

Needless to say - not at all interested in doing this race again.

Nice course; windy; hot; few spectators (about: 2011)

Enjoyed the course, the Fayetteville trail system, UA's campus, and the town square. Spectators were minimal, but those who showed up were great.

Lots of aid stations, although more were needed near the midpoint of the marathon, and additional resources were needed as the botanical garden aid station ran out of water at one point. A few intersections were not clear as to which route to take. I will come back again, as I like visiting Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas.

Well organized, tough course. (about: 2010)

Organization is good, drink stations good, scenery beautiful.

After-race care is good: food, drink, and massage.

The route at the end is too hilly. I realize that there are some limitations, but going up Dickson, then up Block really kills a chance to run a smooth finish. How about working the route toward College Ave. at LaFayette (or even farther east) running south, then turning west to the square? I liked the old route's finish better up Razorback Road... you could see the finish for a good distance and work toward it. The current finish is up a hill, around a corner, and it's over.

All that being said, I'll probably be back in 2011.

My first marathon, but not my last! (about: 2010)

What a gorgeous day! Perfect for my first marathon! I would definitely do it again, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of publicity/sponsors. I got first place in my age group and I really wanted a plaque, but I ended up with a coffee mug instead. I think they should using timing chips in the future. This event should be sponsored by the University or by Wal Mart, and maybe it would become a bigger event.

I felt pretty lonely for the last 5 miles, and that was where I needed motivation the most. Most of the voluneers were sitting in lawn chairs reading magazines. And I only found one station that had GU, even though I think a few others did. I felt like I had to ask for it.

Also, this is kind of weird, but I heard that people were cheating. Someone said they saw a girl hop out of a truck with a bib on and start running in some random location. That's really not fair to everyone else who trained really hard to be where they are.

Fun and Very Challenging Marathon! (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hogeye Marathon

The 2010 Hogeye Marathon was on a perfect day - 50 degrees at start, reaching the mid 60's, with beautiful, clear, blue skies and a light breeze. The race course has some challenging hills, especially in the first and last couple of miles. The water and Gatorade stations were well positioned and staffed. I totally enjoyed this event and I'm definitely planning to do it again!
