Average Ratings: Course - Organization - Fans -

Well-organized, pleasant smaller race (about: 2001)
Course: 4 Organization: 5 Fans: 3
A Runner from Tucson, Arizona (11/6/01)

Gently rolling course with lots of downhill early; mostly on paved paseos (paths, not on the road) and through some neighborhoods. Several stretches with no spectators (hence the 3), but plenty of people parked in lawn chairs by the course in the neighborhood sections. Terrific water stops EVERY MILE (!!) well-staffed by the loudly cheering scouts (both varieties), and miles clearly marked. Only bad parts: not much healthy food at the end - bagels would be nice; the course winds through an industrial area in last few miles, with few spectators, though the loud band was great. Weather was perfect - 60ish, overcast with some drizzle. Nice finish medal, great t-shirt. Very friendly locals made me glad I braved LAX and the LA traffic to get there. (it's far enough outside LA to not look like a big city)

good course change (about: 2001)

A Runner from Oak Park, Ca. (11/6/01)

I'd like to thank the race officials for scheduling the overcast/rainy weather. They did a perfect job(even though It could have been a few degrees cooler). Please do it again next year.

The course change was excellent. I really enjoyed NOT running through Magic Mountain. Also, the Newhall Park area was a good choice for the finish area festivities.

Even though the spectators were sparse along much of the course, it was more than made up for by the few that came out! The volunteers at the aid stations were great. The overall marathon atmosphere was very upbeat.

My only complaint was at the finish area... one of the food stands was told to shut down by 10am. I happened to cross the finish line at 11, so I missed out (presumably) on the good food and was left with only hot dogs!

Overall, nicely organized, good weather, and the right amount of course tweaks to keep things running smoothly!

Thought it was great! (about: 2001)

This is the second year I have run this marathon. I really enjoy the diversity of the course. You cover a lot of different terrain and everything is very clearly marked. If only they could make the last 5-6 miles a little less drab; going through the industrial area makes it hard to keep motivated.

Great marathon for beginners! (about: 2001)

A Runner from Mexico City, Mexico (11/5/01)

I really loved Santa Clarita´s Marathon. It was my first and the organization, course, competitors and spectators made me feel really confident. I am not american and had to travel from Mexico City to run but I felt since the beginning as if I were at home. Thanks for this great experience! I will certainly recommend you here in Mexico: Viva el Maraton de Santa Clarita!

A First Class Act (about: 2001)
Course: 4 Organization: 5 Fans: 1
A Runner from Costa Mesa, Ca (11/5/01)

Very few spectators along this route, but super enthusiastic volunteer group. The organization of this race couldn't be better. Comfortable tour buses shuttle you to the start line (no school buses here) where a heated tent awaits you. Once there, food, coffee, water, fruit, chairs, and potties are plentiful. Very impressive. Water and gatorade every mile! Great finish line party, nice finishers medal. All this for $30!!! I will definitely be back next year. The course is above average for speed, I was about a minute off my PR.

Excellent Event, a definite run for marathoners (about: 2000)
Course: 5 Organization: 5 Fans: 5
A Runner from Santa Clarita, California (5/21/01)

I've run in both half-marathon's this event has offered, and I ran 8 of the final 13 miles with my dad (who ran the full marathon). The first half of the course is very inviting as it's downhill for 12 of the 13 miles. There are many spectators lining the route, offering support to everybody. It is very organized as all bags are transported w/o mishaps from the starting line to a designated area after the finish.

The marathon course continues along more of the cities sites going through parks and by Magic Mountain. Not a lot of shade though on the first half of the marathon as it runs alongside the Santa Clara 'River'. Half-marathon introduced 2 years ago, and looks like it will be around a while. This event also had a 5K and a kiddie K, so people with all types of talent are accommodated. I'm 17 and ran a 1:40:20 in 1999 and a 1:25:12 in 2000, and I look forward to doing ever better this year!

loved it as a half-marathoner! (General Comments)

shannon from Santa Clarita, CA (11/26/00)

The S.C. Marathon was great because it was for the most part downhill so that's a definite bonus. It was my 2nd year running it. I ran the half-marathon and I think more people my age (13) should run it. It's an excellent experience and it's very organized.

Great spirit, good support! (about: 2000)

A Runner from Somis, California (11/10/00)

Food at the expo would be nice and more booths, but overall I like the 'smallness' and community feel of this event.

Great support at start (about: 2000)

A Runner from Claremont, CA (11/8/00)

Heated tent at the start was pure luxury -- thanks (half marathoner)
