+ Pros
Good combination of rural and urban scenery. If you're a NASCAR fan, you'll love the first mile.
Well supported by Police and Volunteer Ambulance Corps, esp Dover & Little Creek. I must have passed a civil servant at least every mile or 2.
Bricks aid stations: well stocked. Excellent all around support from the local tri-club.
The volunteers and fans that did show were enthusiastic. esp. Bricks & the 2 women with the cowbell.
Plenty of parking w/parking close (100 yds) to start & finish.
Plenty of room on starting line. Other marathons this has not been the case.
Plenty of post race food/drink. See above.
Instant results on large screen. See above.
To reply to previous commenter: Many of the mega marathons do not have any/enough port-o-potties at start, much less the course. After mile 5 is almost all open farmland and trees. Ya get the picture... They had one at the half and mile 24 (park). No wait for restroom at start. Hardly a reason for such a negative rating.
- Cons
A few of the turns could use more markings, especially in Dover Capitol Area.
Need a few more Gatorade/water stations after 20 miles.
There were several sections, mile long sections, with nothing but farmland. Some traffic was present on the course but not really a factor due to above.
Definite growth potential, Dover Downs is a great venue for a marathon: plenty of room and unique historical landmarks nearby as well Dover Downs Hotel. A few corporate and local business sponsorships would help as well.
Perhaps next year we'll see Danica Patrick? (37 min. 10K)
