2013 Marathon Preparation
Even though it seems that preparation for the New River Marathon (Half Marathon & 5K) goes on throughout the year, we're picking up steam as we approach 6 months out. As in the first two years, the New River awards will be locally sourced. The top 3 men and women in each race receive a hand-turned wooden bowl in addition to a spectacular slate of prizes ranging from 2-night stays at local BnB, float and kayak trips on the New River, fly fishing lessons (for 4), Ashe County Cheese gift basket and so much more. Top 3 in age groups will once again receive locally crafted awards. Finisher medallions are branded local woods (reclaimed 150 year old American Chestnut in 2011 and a salvaged maple tree in 2012). We're not only Made in the USA, but we're Made Local. All of our great course volunteers represent local community groups (that we're thrilled to support in return) and local business owners who love to "roll out the red carpet" for our guests. Unfortunately, the High Country's best Blue Grass band got rained out in 2012. But they'll be back in 2013. It is a thrill to share the beauty of our home with other runners. Come runnin'.
