Everyone that lined the streets, the friends, families, volunteers and the wonderful Linclon Police Dept. were all very supportive and encouraged us the entire way. I know I could not have done my best without hearing and seeing their applause and needed words of encouragement!!!

First Marathon

The race (my daughter and I did the half marathon) was the most organized race I have ever competed in, including the Boulder Bolder. Being my daughter's first road race ever, I was a little apprehensive for her, but she did quite well, and I feel the course had a lot to do with that. It is challenging but not so tough that a 'newbie' can run and enjoy it. We are already making plans for next year and want to do the marathon. Again, kudos for a great job. I only wish I lived closer so I could be a part of the Lincoln Track Club.

Wonderful Event (about: 2004)

Thanks to all volunteers and supporters for a great event. The only area I found lacking somewhat is the crowd support. However, Lincoln had FAR more crowd support than Omaha (and race day was much colder and unseasonable than the Omaha race, but there was a good-sized crowd).

I liked the chip timing, and the pre-race expo was well-organized.

Needs Help!!! (about: 2004)

The half marathoners should start either before or after the marathoners, not at the same time. There was little support by the community, but the ones that were there were very nice. At the 5-hour mark they started taking the finish line down. The announcer packed up and left, leaving the finishers only minimal applause at the finish. The water stops were very good. Not many after-race recovery snacks available. Plenty of medical help around.

A great event (about: 2004)

First Marathon

This was my first marathon, and I am from Lincoln. The weather was perfect and the organization was first-rate. There is a free pasta feed the night before for all runners and their family members. After the run there is a complimentary banquet (which is great) and a massage is available (free) to all who have run the full marathon (GET THE MASSAGE).

The first half of the course is run through some very nice residential areas and there is a great deal of spectator support. The second half is an out-and-back, which is not as scenic as the front, but there is tremendous fan support (even the Governor was there). The race is chip-timed, which is a nice thing for those of us who start near the back, and when you cross the finish line (on the university) you are announced, both by name and where you are from, which is a nice touch and is great if you have family members in attendance.

There is plenty of water, Allsport, vaseline and whatever else you might need on the course. The front runners are escorted and the Lincoln Police do an excellent job of traffic control during the entire race. There are bike escorts patrolling the entire race and time is called at each mile marker.
In sum, it is really a well run and well supported event. The Race Directors have been doing this for 27 years and they really have their act together and it shows.

Enjoyed the whole experience... (about: 2004)

50+ previous marathons

I can't believe that only 872 ran the marathon. This was very well done and set up. The pasta party was included in the entry fee. One small problem - I was still running out while others were finishing and was not told to go up the street until I ran past the street and realized that this was wrong. The volunteers were great. After the course support was pulled, there was plenty of help to get us to the finish line. A nice indoor building before and after the race was nice.

Fine Regional Race (about: 2004)

Paul Mollica from Chicago, Illinois (5/3/04)
6-10 previous marathons | 1 Lincoln Marathon

The course is an approximately 13-mile loop through mostly residential neighborhoods (shared with the 1/2 marathon racers) followed by an out-and-back down a main street through parks, right-of-ways and the like. The race begins and ends and the university stadium. The course rolled a bit, but was not terribly hilly.

Contrary to some posters, I found the out-and-back to be an advantage (a bit dull in spots, but you could anticipate inclines, and you weren't quite so lonely on the trip back). Residents were out in force. The stadium was opened in the morning and was a warm place to wait. The field was small enough to allow the marathoners to get to pace in the first mile. The National Guard did an excellent job of organizing the event.

Not a lot of chow at the end (bananas!), but not a high priority with me, especially considering the very reasonable entry fee.

What a great experience!!!! (about: 2004)

1 previous marathon | 1 Lincoln Marathon

This was my first marathon and I have nothing but positive comments to make. The expo and night before Pasta-thon made for really nice pre-marathon events. These events were held downtown which made it easy to just park the car and walk from place to place (Lincoln has a convenient cluster of downtown movie theaters and restaurants - some of which my husband and I took advantage of over the marathon weekend).

The weather on the day of the marathon was perfect, cool and not overly bright. There were plenty of supporters along the course (some playing inflatable guitars, blasting 'Eye of the Tiger' from stereos, giving high fives, holding signs that read 'You go, girl', etc.) The course offers some beautiful scenery and there is an abundance of water/sports drink/orange slice/port-o-potty stops along the way.

After running the marathon, they offer a light lunch while they do a raffle and the awards ceremony. If you have any reason to come to Nebraska or your goal is to do the 50 States + DC, you really should consider participating in this marathon!!! You'll have a great time.

Best Spring Marathon Around (about: 2003)
Course: 5 Organization: 5 Fans: 5
B. B. from Des Moines, IA (1/27/04)

This is simply an awesome marathon. As long as I am able to run, I will do the Lincoln Marathon every year.

Drinks with lids and straws is great.
Military band playing at the start.
Support from all the volunteers.
Peaceful and relaxing pasta event the night before.
Nice gym to stretch in before the race.
Availablity to use a real toilet before the race.
So many good things to list!

The National Guard give it a great spirit (about: 2003)

It was an honor to run with the Guard. It was inspirational having guardsmen and women handing out drinks and encouraging us, especially during war time. We are able to run freely because our military defends our freedom.

The drinks with lids and straws - a definite plus.

Everyone I encountered in the race, along the course and through the organization were friendly.

Very well organized.
