Overall this race was very well done, especially since it was an inaugural event. The course traveled through mostly rural areas. I thought that it was very peaceful and scenic.

There were more than enough aid stations. And, there were more spectators/entertainers than I would have expected.

There is only one thing i would consider changing for next year. Parking was a bit hectic in the morning. The volunteers were attempting to park people quickly and efficiently but many people did not seem to notice them. Reflective traffic vests may have helped this, and made parking easier.

My wife and I had a wonderful weekend. (about: 2010)

Everybody who we came in contact with was very nice and friendly. The people at the Holiday Inn, the workers and volunteers on the course, and the other runners were very gracious and kind.

Exceptional Inaugural Event! (about: 2010)

I have only run large, major marathons and wanted a more low-key atmosphere this time. Given that this was an inaugural race, I had some concerns that it would be chaotic and poorly organized. Boy, was this not the case! The only part that seemed somewhat disorganized was actually getting into the fairgrounds and getting parked. There was no traffic direction and it was very backed up. Other than that, things were great. There were ample port-o-potties at the start. I was concerned about the start as well since there weren't any corrals or pacers, but it ended up being very smooth.

The course was very nice. There were a few hills, but I live and train in Nashville, TN so the hills were minimal compared to what I was used to. The only negative about the course would be if it were very hot. Since you are out in the middle of the country, there is little to no shade. Luckily this year it wasn't too hot, but if the temps rise, it would be brutal. I was extremely impressed with the amount of race support. For such a small race there were a ton of enthusiastic volunteers and ample water stops. Also, the medical support was terrific. I saw medical personnel on the course every 5-10 minutes, which was great.

Overall, it was an awesome race (although I didn't do as well as I would have liked) and I would recommend it to everyone.

My compliments to the director for putting on a great inaugural event. Very few teething problems. Pre-race communication from the director was superb. I knew the brand and flavors of gel and power drink weeks in advance. All race logistics were emailed in advance. Very nice.

The course itself is a rural course on very rolling hills. Some were some pretty good! I'm a good climber and hills are where I can pick up a couple of places. So bring them on! When you qualify for Boston here, my congratulations. Feel proud. You really earned it!

The fan base was small and clustered along the final mile and finish area. But along the course, which ran through farm lands, I was very impressed that families were out in front of almost every house cheering us on. A small but enthusiastic fan base! My compliments. There were also several entertainment groups along the course. I never thought I'd see a rock band in the middle of a corn field, but hey, it was there!

Post-race, there was a big, family-oriented bash. Food, activities for kids, and family members could get in and eat too for just $2. The community really supports this event.

The finisher's medal was smallish, but unique, shaped like the State of Indiana. Boston Qualifiers got a medal with a special "Boston Ribbon." Nice touch.

Explanation for stars:
Course (3.5) - a rural course, but cleared of traffic and easy to run on. I reserve 5s for historic or stunning scenery courses.
Organization: (4) - would be a 5 if not for a few first time issues (like cups hadn't arrived at a couple of water stops by the time I got there).
Spectators (4) - few but enthusiastic fans!

I won this marathon, and the press corp, newspaper and TV swarmed all over me for interviews. It was a fantastic experience. Royalty for a day!

If you want a nice, quiet run in the countryside, to be well taken care of, and maybe, just maybe, to be treated like royalty, then this is the race for you.

If you love to run, this is the race for you. This was my 7th marathon and I could find no fault with any part of this race. The course was great - all country running with rolling hills and great roads and scenery. Water stops were every mile, with GU, energy drinks, and food for both the half and full. The volunteers where fantastic with stations on either side of the road, so no one ran in front of you. There were spectators and entertainment to keep you busy. No cars - they closed the roads. The course was very well marked, with timers at every mile. This was a disposable chip race, which, as you all know, is great because stopping to let someone cut your chip off turns your legs to jelly. Anyway, if you like a challenge and love a friendly environment, this is the race for you. After the race they had a great party with lots of foodd and while you where running, they catered for your family with music, food and, best of all, a play area with jumping castles (etc.) for the kids. If you are not running the Boston in the spring, this is a great alternative. Evansville is a family-friendly place to visit, with a great zoo for the kids and lots of other things to make a weekend of it.

All done exceptionally well on rural plains/hills (about: 2010)

Hard to believe this was an inaugural event; it hit all of the most important points perfectly: every mile had tremendous crowd support, water/-ade, restrooms, and there was never competition with traffic. The scenic countryside was refreshing, punctuated with heart-pumping, southern indiana rollers. Organization/support for the event easily could have accommodated 3-4 times as many participants. It will be fun to watch it grow. (Also appreciated: generous packet pick-up availability, around 20 music points on course, slick Dri-Fit shirt.)

First Marathon

This was my first ever marathon experience and I only did the half. It was very well organized, and on a beautiful course out through the country. I can't wait for my next race... but my knees can.
