The organization was very good. The course is almost perfectly flat. Plenty of water stations ,with friendly workers. Spectators were only at certain parts of the course. The finish was fantastic, in the courtyard of a museum. Great goody bag at the finish.
The exhibition hall was only average. The Vienna Boys Choir performed for the runners and family only with a purchased ticket. Great. Downer was you had to purchase the race t-shirt.
Yes, the weather was near perfect. Great race.

It was nearly a perfect race. Ok, the spectators aren't comparable with those in Berlin, and the course wasn't as amazing as Roma, but all in all, it is worth it to run this one. Ps. Weather was hot.

I really can't imagine a better event. Every race will have its ups and downs, but they are often your own fault or just bad luck. When you have 25,000 people to manage, some are going to have an awesome day and others terrible; such is life.
I just hope I can keep coming back to this race each year till I drop dead.
Equally, I couldn't believe how warm and friendly the Viennese are considering I don't speak a word of German. Maybe it was my Australian accent but I spoke English in the Billa supermarket and almost everyone understood me.
I love all the Viennese... see you in '08.

Vienna has been my best marathon experience to date. It is a beautiful city with a well organized event. The course is flat and fast; there are a couple of stretches along the course that repeat, but some of it was through a nice shady park, so nothing worth complaining about. Some great fan support, especially in the city center. And the finish area was set up with a fest-like atmosphere in the Heldenplatz in front of the Hofburg palace. The expo was rather large with plenty of displays worth exploring. The carb party was awesome! It was held in the historic Rathaus (City Hall) and they served kaiserschmarrn - a delicious Austrian dessert! My only complaint is that the T-shirt was a little expensive for the poor quality... part of the logo came off after the second washing... . The Vienna City Marathon is a first-class event and I highly recommend it!

I read some of the negative comments relating to previous years' races, but they don't apply to the 2007 event.
It is well organized, with good support in the "InnerStadt" and a fantastic finish in front of the Imperial Palace.
Yes, I agree that there are stretches of the marathon where it doubles back on itself and in the Prater there is little support. However, you can only work with what you've got; Vienna is a compact but beautiful city and if you have to run parts of it twice, then so be it.
Highly recommended.

I recommend it to everybody. Flat course. Although I might be biased since Vienna is my hometown, I've seen other races, and this one is definitely great.

Vienna is hard to beat for tourism so it's worth staying for four or five days. I found the course really nice, and I didn't mind running in the Pratter (the park) again towards the end - especially as they were blasting some Mozart music (eerie experience). My main complaints: I like to keep a souvenir t-shirt of all the marathons I run but I'm not ready to pay 20 euros (or something like that) to get it. Also, don't run this one for a PB as the combination of the marathon, the half-marathon and the marathon relay makes it a real mess during the first 5K. Except for that, I give it my thumbs up.

That marathon wasn't worth 50 euros. For me 50e is like for a German person 200 but it's not only about the cash. The track was awesome itself. Yeah... Vienna is a nice city but running three times along the same boring thing is like.... You know, they could have made us running four times round 10KM track in a nice park. Perhaps the park is nice but so what when you won't see all that's worth seeing? Only a few nice trees and flowers. I hope you know what I mean: in such a beatiful city, you shouldn't run three times along a boring ordinary street. I also don't like when the start and finish aren't in the same place and the organizers don't think about how people get to the start and how will they get their cars back from the start at the finish line for example if they have a confusion. One ticket for the underground in the goody bag wouldn't cost too much if they get 50e from your wallet.

Not the best of courses but there are worse. Ran it again this year as last year I'd performed so badly in the heat that I felt I could only do better this time. My main complaint was the use of paper cups. I lost a fair amount of time at drink stations for that reason. They should use bottles as in London and the carb stations should be separate, and served in pouches again as in London. I feel sorry for the guys whining about waiting for their chip deposit, and not getting a medal, but when you run at 3-hour pace you don't get those sort of problems. Marathon running is a cruel old game in more ways than one!
