9th Annual Lake Placid Marathon & Half Marathon
Brad Konkler (12/2/12)

JOIN US SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2013!

Lake Placid, NY. Welcome to the 9th annual Lake Placid Marathon and Half Marathon! Each year, the Lake Placid Marathon attracts athletes from all over North America and abroad. In 2012, we hosted 2,000+ runners and thousands of spectators from over 42 U.S. States, Canada, Asia,South America, and Europe. We provide a world class race with small town Olympic Village charm.

The 2013 race will be capped at 2,100 runners.

The Olympic village of Lake Placid is in the beautiful High Peaks Region of Upstate New Yorks Adirondack Mountains. The two loop Marathon "out- and-back" course is best described as moderate rolling, some flat, with a few hills. The Half Marathon is a single out-and-back loop. The most significant hills are near the ski jumps on Route 73 (once for the half marathon and twice for the full marathon) and leading up to the Olympic Oval finish in the heart of the Village near the Olympic Arena (once for the half marathon and once for the full marathon). Each of these hills is approximately 3/10 of a mile long. Chuck Engles winning time of 2:34:39 in 2006 (course record) proves the course is reasonable and fair.

The marathon features 25 aid station opportunities in 26.2 miles. The half marathon features 15 aid station opportunities in 13.1 miles. The first four aid stations are water only. The remainder of the aid stations are stocked with water, energy drink, energy bars, energy gel, fruit, pretzels, cookies, and other energy foods. Free Post Race Athlete Food and drink is provided at the Olympic Oval finish area.

Designed to be similar to the Ford Ironman USA -Lake Placid triathlon run course, the races begin in the Olympic Village on Main Street and proceeds around beautiful Mirror Lake for the first 3 miles before heading out of town to the Horse Show Grounds, Ski Jump area, and River Road along the Au Sable River (A class III trout steam) out-and-back. The course is very scenic including Whiteface Mountain and numerous distant mountain ranges. The Race Finish includes one 400 meter lap around the Sheffield Olympic Oval where U.S. speed skater Eric Heiden captured five individual gold medals at the 1980 Winter Games. A large sound system and enthusiastic Race Announcers are waiting for all finishers as they approach and cross the Finish Line.

The event provides an Athlete Village on the grassy infield within the Oval near the Race Finish. Vendor tents, Free Athlete post-race food, medical, Free Athlete Massage, and merchandise are available to registered athletes (must display race bib). Plenty of spectators are present on Race Day -mainly at the Start/Finish areas.
