great orginazation & motorcycle escorts at the start. aid stations for the 1st half. a great volunteer helped me with water, but after 221/2 I was on my own & thirsty. Course is out n back on hiway & not very scenic. No aliens. The 5:30 start was good. HOT with long uphill/downhill grades. I made it. Thanks. only 22 marathoners. great finishers plaque & turtle.

Billy from Baltimore, Maryland (9/4/02)

I have to say that the race director Bob is very cool. I really appreciated his and his wife's hospitality. This was a great marathon too. It is a nice, challenging up and back course. No I didn?t see any Aliens but I couldn?t believe how many people I knew there from previous marathons. I even ran with a guy from the Grandfather Mountain Marathon in North Carolina . Small world, literally. I ran with a friend of mine most of the way. Towards the end, he pulled a three minute lead on me. It was a great site though. I tried to catch him and there was another guy on my heels. I must admit, it was one of my most competitive races ever at the end in the condition I was in. I enjoyed the push to finish.

Thanks to Bob and all the volunteers. You guys are great. It was well worth the trip from Baltimore.

A genuine and hospitable marathon (about: 2002)

A Runner from Milwaukee, WI (9/4/02)

This is a small marathon with few volunteers. However, I found the race director and those that did volunteer to be extremely hospitable and genuinely interested in my welfare. When I was concerned about missing my flight out (a 3 hr drive away) the race director gladly let me start an hour early. During the race, local runner's spouses pulled over in their cars and provided on the spot fluids and fruits.

bare bones (about: 2000)

A Runner from Texas (9/5/00)

This marathon is for a good cause and the organizers genuinely attempt to put on a good race. Very small race. Course is on the shoulder of a highway for 24 of the 26 miles. Many of the water stations are not manned by volunteers and runners must help themselves to water left in containers. No crowd support whatsoever. Not a certified course. Race starts at 5:30 am with a 5K starting at 8:00 am so it is dodge the slow 5K runners for the top marathoners.
