NEW MUSEUM IN MARATHON
Athens, April 11, 2002 - With the support of
ATHENS 2004, a new Marathon Museum will open in
the municipality of Marathon. The museum is
expected to become a popular attraction for
millions of visitors both during and after the
Olympic Games.
ATHENS 2004 President, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, announced the
company's decision in a letter sent to the Mayor of Marathon, Mr Christos
Barbas. She underlined that the museum project will further cooperation
between ATHENS 2004 and the municipality of Marathon. The municipality is
one of the most important Olympic areas as it includes the starting point
for the Marathon Race as well as the Olympic Canoe/Kayak Slalom Centre.
"The founding of the Marathon Race Museum will constitute an important
athletic and cultural legacy of the Olympic Games and I invite you to
cooperate towards a better result," states the ATHENS 2004 President in
her letter to the Mayor.
ATHENS 2004 responded favourably to the municipality's proposal to
utilize the old school at Marathon to house the museum.
Ever since the new school complex started operating, the old building had
been abandoned with no plans for its future use.
The building is located on the main municipal road, very near the central
square and about 150 metres from the Marathon race starting point. It is
comprised of two main buildings and two auxiliary ones covering a 3,000
sqm area of land.
The main building was constructed at the turn of the century (1910) and
covers an area of about 200 sqms. In both its interior and exterior,
it is in relatively good condition. Its main features include large
rooms, a high ceiling (about 5 metres) and a tile roof.
