ADIDAS DUBLIN MARATHON READIES TO DEBUT 2002 CHANGES
Entry Deadline is October 9th
BOSTON (September 5, 2002) -The 2002 adidas Dublin Marathon will debut new
start and finish lines, a record prize purse and what is expected to be
record participation on race day, October 28th.
Over 8,000 runners are expected to line up race morning at the new start
area in downtown Dublin near the historic Dail office, the Irish house of
parliament. The 26.2-mile course will take participants through
architecturally-rich city streets and past cultural landmarks such as the
Royal Dublin Society, Trinity College and the National Gallery of Ireland.
The race's new finish line is at Merrion Square, the heart of Georgian
Dublin, and just a short stroll from many of the city's centuries-old pubs.
With an all-time record prize purse of E90,000 the competition is expected
to be as stellar as the local Guinness stout. A deep field is expected to
compete for the E15,000 (each for both women's and men's divisions) first
place award.
The first Dublin Marathon in 1980 had just 1,420 finishers. Last year saw a
total field of 7,987. Despite the tragic events of September 11th, over
three thousand Americans traveled to Dublin for the marathon. "The Dublin
Marathon is moving up the ranks as a leading world marathon," said race
director Jim Aughney. "We believe we are moving forward with a total
marathon experience that will bring the entry level through the 10,000
mark and take the Dublin Marathon into the spotlight of other international
marathons."
Dublin travel packages start at $1,147.00 and include airfare from New York
City, a seven-night stay, breakfast, a city tour, transportation to the
race start and the on-site services of the Marathon Tours staff. For more
