MAYOR FREDD ATKINS NAMED HONORARY CHAIRMAN OF SARASOTA MARATHON
Registration for Race Opens
Sarasota, FL (July 19, 2006) – Sarasota Marathon Grouper Run, a
two-year-old Sarasota, Florida-based organization, announced the
appointment of Mayor Fredd Atkins as honorary chairman of the March 4, 2007
marathon and half marathon and the launch of its new website.
The website, www.sarasotamarathon.com, includes information about the
marathon and opens registration. The race is a Boston Marathon qualifier
and puts Sarasota on the prestigious list of cities boasting a world-class
marathon. This year's marathon, presented by ABC 7, is expected to draw at
least 3,000 runners, plus their families and fans. In its inaugural race
last year, it generated $50,000 for its local charities.
"I'm very proud to be actively involved with the 2007 Sarasota Marathon,"
said Sarasota Mayor Fredd Atkins. "It is valued by the runners who come
from all over the world and our community as well."
Lisette Riveron, event coordinator and founder, described the Sarasota
Marathon as "truly a run with a view."
"With its flat, fast and scenic USATF-certified course and average
temperature of 68 degrees, the Sarasota Marathon is one of Florida's best
distance running opportunities," said Riveron, an avid runner and
marathoner. Through hard work, positive attitude and endless energy, she
beat the odds and made the inaugural marathon an overwhelming success.
Last year's marathon, sponsored by leading local businesses and media
organizations, exceeded expectations with more than 1,700 runners
representing 42 states and nine countries. More than 500 volunteers worked
the event and joined the hundreds of Sarasota residents that lined the
streets and the Ringling Bridge to cheer on the runners.
The Sarasota Marathon is sponsored by the following businesses and
organizations: ABC 7, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, McCarver
and Moser, Long Bar Pointe, Odato Marketing Group, Brandenburg Life
Foundation, Gregory Sheller and Team, the Sarasota Yacht Club, AirTran
Airways and Custom Carts.
