Borrelli kept Keith Pierce in his sights, caught and passed him with two miles to go and pulled away to win the 13th annual race Sunday morning in his own backyard. Pierce, who is from Krum, Texas, wound up second in 2:23:07 after holding the early lead.

The nearly stagnant economy has not slowed runners or sponsors for the Steamtown Marathon. Despite economics constraints that have limited consumer spending on other major sporting events, the 13th annual Steamtown Marathon will be run Sunday with a consistent number of entrants, nearing 1,900 and roughly the same sponsorship revenue as in recent years.

In October 2007, Christopher Molitoris, 22, a recent University of Scranton graduate, crossed the finish line of the Steamtown Marathon and then headed to his interview with the universitys Fulbright committee. Molitoris finished the marathon, showered and aced the presentation. He will spend more than a year in Morocco, North Africa, to study the regions Arabic and French tongues and complete an intensive research project.
