Skyrunners removed from Pikes Peak Marathon Results (The Mercury News)
Agusti Roc of Barcelona, Spain, was the first across the finish line in the Pikes Peak Marathon, but he wasn't the winner. Apparently the Pikes Peak Marathon had joined the Skyrunner series of races - and Roc was following a different set of rules from the other runners. The Skyrunner rules allow participants to descend as quickly as possible, including cutting corners on a course. Roc was removed from the rankings of the Pikes Peak Marathon, but still awarded Skyrunner series points. But he isn't the race champion. That honor goes to Galen Burrell of Boulder, Colo., while Erica Larson, of Los Alamos, N.M., won the women's race for the fifth time in six years. Seems there were two sets of rules - unbeknownst to race officials - being used by competitors as they descended ran down from the Pikes Peak's summit. Roc is a competitor in the international Buff Skyrunner World Series, a series of seven high-altitude mountain races. The Pikes Peak Marathon joined the series for the first time this year
