The twenty-seventh edition of the Capital City Marathon had perfect weather and for the third year the same overall winner. Jesse Stevick ran the last twenty-three miles of the marathon alone to a winning time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 12 seconds. Annie Thiessen, Tacoma, took the women's title with a time of 3 hours 5 minutes and 34 seconds.

Jesse Stevik won the Capital City Marathon for the third time in nearly ideal conditions with a time of 2 hours 35 minutes and 12 seconds. Annie Thiessen of Tacoma was the marathon's first women finisher. Thiessen, 37, finished in 3:05:34.

The Capital City Marathon has been listed among the top thirty Boston Marathon qualifying races under a category titled "Most likely to qualify" in a list published by MarathonGuide.com. Capital City Marathon is the only race in Washington State. Race organizers took a bit of a gamble this year, creating a new race course that took the runners from downtown Olympia out to Boston Harbor and back, replacing a relatively flat course with a hilly one. In revising the course, they added a lot of beautiful scenery of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and other eye-pleasing rural landscapes.

Karen Steen won the Capital City Marathon for the seventh time out of eight tries, this year in 2:58:48. Matthew Ellis was the victor in his first attempt on the course in 2:36:31. 34, of Tacoma, who finished in 2:36:31. It was EllisÂ’ first Capital City Marathon. Karen Steen, 40, of Olympia was the top female runner. She completed the course in 2:58:48, winning the event for the seventh time in eight tries.

The Capital City Marathon is returning to its previous course around Capitol Lake after two years of road repairs were made to an earthquake damaged stretch of Deschutes Parkway. The 24th Capital City Marathon will not however return either of last year's winners. Both men's winner Andy Wedam and women's winner Karen Steen are injured and will not be competing. Former winner Phil Jasperson and Craig Dickson, a 2002 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier will be competing in what should be a very fast and competitive field.

Olympia, Washington's Capital City Marathon is set to go in May 18th, 2003, and is back on it's original, scenic track around Capital Lake. The Deschutes Trail around the Lake suffered damages from an earthquake late February, 2001, and it has taken this long to get it back in working condition. Runner's are enthusiastic not having to start the run uphill as it was not intended for the race, and they are happy to have old Puget Sound back in their view.

Race Director, Lesley Roberts' fears were put to rest this past Sunday when a record number of people turned out for the Capital City Marathon and associated race events. There was concern that an earthquake back in February would deter runners, but participation was at an all-time-high and all 50 states were represented.
 
   Jasperson sets pace for Capital City Marathon (The Olympiad)
With the closest challenger ten minutes behind him, Phil Jasperson easily regained the crown for the Capital City Marathon in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 28 seconds. This was his fourth time winning the Capital City Marathon. Jasperson competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials last year and plans to run the NYC Marathon in November, which is the first qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Trials.
