Doctor to study Manitoba Marathon's effects on runners' hearts
(CBC News Canada) Dr. Davinder Jassal will examine 15 runners in the Manitoba Marathon after the marathon on Sunday. As soon as they cross the finish line, they'll be transported to St. Boniface Hospital to undergo MRI testing. Dr. Jassal is looking to see if there's any swelling or damage to the right side of the heart after they run the marathon. Previous studies have not used MRI. One at the Boston Marathon used ultrasound tests, while another in Manitoba used blood tests.

Podruchny running in his 100th marathon in Manitoba
(Winnipeg Free Press) This Fathers Day Tom Podruchny will run his 100th marathon at the age of 71. He ran his first marathon in 1971 in Manitoba and will be the first Manitoban to reach the century mark in the marathon. When he did his first marathon, most of his relatives did not think he would live through it.

Double jeopardy: Heart attacks mar marathon's clean slate
(Winnipeg Sun) The Manitoba Marathon has been run for 23 years with out a severe health problem with its runners. That is until Sunday's race, when two half-marathoners had to be hospitalized for heart attacks.
One runner suffered full cardiac arrest after crossing the finish line, the other collapsed during the race. Both were in stable condition later that day.

Hired gun an easy winner in Manitoba Marathon
(Winnipeg Sun) Zimbabwe native Shingirai Badza won Sunday's Manitoba Marathon in 2:32:04, but well off his 2:13 personal best. Badza, who has run as a hired pacesetter in other marathons, was in Canada and had a sponsor willing to pay his way to the Manitoba race. It was worth his while as he went home $1000 richer.

Women's winner Cochrane a distant blur in Manitoba Marathon
(Winnipeg Sun) Joan Cochrane came to Manitoba for Sunday's Manitoba Marathon and close a deal on her father's. The Saskatoon resident succeed in both endeavors, winning the women's field of hte race in 3:07:15.
It was her second best time and nearly seven minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
