Strong Marathoning Growth in USA - Female Numbers Surge
Each year MarathonGuide.com creates the definitive report about the state of Marathoning in the USA. Although the year is not yet over, we're reviewing the numbers and will give you this teaser (full report coming early-/mid-January. 2008 will see a record number of marathon finishers - approximately 424,000 marathon finishes, an increase of 4.2% (approximately 17,000) from 2007. Of great interest (at least to us) is that after a year of declining female participitation, women accounted for a record number of participants and finishers: nearly 40.4% of finishers were female - the highest percentage ever - as the number of female finshes grew by 6.7% compared to a 2.7% growth in the number of male finishes. Mississippi Blues Marathon - Jan 3 - Jackson, MS
Edward Tabut, a Kenyan living in Albuquerque NM, won the 2009 Mississippi Blues Marathon in 2:18:53. Jynocel Basweti, a Kenyan living in Santa Fe NM, the winner of three marathons in 2008, finished second in 2:19:19. Stephen Chemlany, a Kenyan living in Sleepy Hollow NY, who was the runner-up of the 2008 Memphis Marathon, was third in 2:20:58.
In the women's race, Divina Jepkogei, a Kenyan residing in Chapel Hill NC, was the winner in a new course record time of 2:46:29. Serkalem Abrha, of Tibia, the winner of the 2008 Hartford Marathon and third place finisher at the 2008 Quad Cities Marathon, finished second in 2:50:14. Kim Duclos, of Worcester MA, the winner of the 2008 Hyannis Marathon, was third in 2:51:08.

Texas Marathon - Jan 1 - Kingwood, TX
Kurt Klewin, 39 of Oklahoma City OK, won the 2009 Texas Marathon in 2:42:31. 2006 Champion Chuck Engle, 37 of Dublin OH, who had eighteen top three marathon finishes in 2008, finished second in 2:53:35. Manfred Roenz, 39 of Humble TX, the runner-up at the 2008 Lake Geneva Marathon, was third in 2:55:59.
Jessica Jackson, 25 of Salt Lake City UT, was the first female finisher in 3:16:49. Shelah Miner, 33 of Pearland TX, finished second in 3:18:44. McKay Christensen, 45 of Idaho Falls ID, was third in 3:24:10.

Running from an Angel Marathon - Jan 3 - Boulder City, NV
Frank Livaudais, 34 of Austin TX, the winner of the 2008 Easter Marathon Runoff, won the 2009 Running from an Angel Marathon in 3:17:02. Robert Dubiel, 45 of Champlin MN, was the runner-up in 3:23:34. Donald Vines, 54 of St. George UT, was third in 3:24:35.
Debbie Ann Cropper, 47 of Anchorage AK, was the first female finisher in 3:30:20. Lauren Kearney, 42 of Carlsbad CA, the runner-up at the 2007 Santa Clarita Marathon, finished second in 3:40:54. Tiffany Reed, 33 of Casper WY, was third in 4:00:10.

Cadbury Glass Marathon - Jan 4 - Hobart, Australia
Dave Criniti, of Sydney, the runner-up at the 2008 Canberra Marathon and third place finisher at the 2007 Canberra Marathon, won the 2009 Cadbury Glass Marathon in 2:29:55. Daniel Smee, of Hobart, finished second in 2:41:00. Defending Champion Jarrod Shaw, of Hobart, was third in 2:41:01.
In the women's field, Liz Bennett, of Canberra, was the winner in 3:16:14. Robyn Wallace, of Hobart, who was third in 2005, finished second in 3:16:56. Jess Baker was third in 3:16:58.

C&D Xiamen International Marathon - Jan 3 - Xiamen, China
Samuel Muturi, of Kenya, won the 2009 Xiamen International Marathon in a new personal best and course record time of 2:08:51. Muturi took the lead from Negari Terfa, of Ethiopia, at the 40K mark and never relinquished his lead on his way to the victory. Terfa finished second also in a personal best time of 2:09:01. Rachid Kisri, of Morocco, was third in 2:10:33.
