 Air Force Marathon

   Air Force Material Command at Wright-Patterson captures Air Force Marathon major command trophy. (Air Force Material Command)
Air Force Materiel Command, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio, is the winner of the U.S. Air Force Marathon Major Command Challenge Commander's Trophy. The Air Force Marathon had over 7,400 participants compared to 6,300 for the 2007 marathon race.

   Streets to be closed, parking restricted during Baltimore Marathon Saturday (Baltimore Sun)
Baltimore transportation officials have announced temporary street closures and parking restrictions tomorrow across the city for the eighth Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival. The main event, the 26.2 mile marathon, will begin at 8 a.m. at Paca and Pratt streets. Traffic along MLK Jr. Boulevard will remain open in both directions during the marathon.

Thousands of runners trained for many weeks for last year's Chicago Marathon. Nearly 11,000 runners were turned back before finishing their marathon. Race officials shut down the race due to the extreme October heat. This year the marathon hopes to be the best marathon in the world by analyzing last years mishap and others races around the world.
 
   Gebrselassie chasing hallowed two-hour marathon mark (USA Today)
The Chicago Marathon has been the site of 4 world records. Sunday's race is not likely to produce another record but experts differ on how much lower the marathon record will go. Two weekends ago Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia lowered his world record by 27 seconds to 2 hours 3 minutes and 59 seconds. Most agree that 2 hours and 2 minutes is a physiological limit.

   Adere goes for three-peat in Chicago Marathon (The International Daily News)
Two-time champion Berhane Adere will try to become the first woman to win three straight Chicago Marathon titles Sunday. 2008 Olympic Marathon champion Constantina Tomescu-Dita will be among those out to prevent the three-peat performance. Kenyan Daniel Njenga will participate in the men’s race as part of the elite field announced for Sunday’s marathon. Njenga has finished in the top three six times in Chicago, and will be seeking his first victory in the Windy City.

   Volunteer for the IMT Des Moines Marathon (Des Moines Register)
Chris Burch, director of racing events for the Des Moines Marathon, asked for volunteers to help out with the October 19 marathon. More than 1,000 volunteers helped make the race a huge success last year. The 2008 edition is on a path to have record numbers and race officials will push to cover all areas of the race.

   Hartford Marathon Organizers Target New England Runners (Harford Courant)
Shannon McHale qualified for the Olympic Marathon trials at the 2006 Chicago Marathon. She dropped out of the 2007 edition to due the extreme heat. This years fall race was supposed to be the Philadelphia Marathon, but organizers of the Hartford Marathon called and gave her a personal invitation to run the local race. McHale is among several local elite runners to run in Hartford this year.

The Hartford Marathon kicks off Saturday at Bushnell Park at 8 am. More than 5,000 runners are expected for the days events which include the marathon, half-marathon,5K and kids races. Local runners who competed at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will be competing for the top prize on Saturday.

   Lee Troop takes on Ethiopians in epic Melbourne Marathon (Herald Sun)
Lee Troop was slated to retire after the Beijing Olympic Marathon but has arrived in Melbourne to challenge three Ethiopians for the prize in the Melbourne Marathon. Asnake Fekadu, who set his personal best of 2:10.26 in Italy last year, has the best time entering the Melbourne race. He finished eighth in Dubai in January behind world record-holder Haile Gebrselassie.

   Marathon Men: The Dynamic Dozen (Chicago Tribune)
The top twelve marathon men were ordered based on their dominance of an era. The women have only spanned three decades. The men's marathon has spanned over a century. Heading up the list are Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia who won at Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964 and he began the African era in distance running. Frank Shorter appears number two on the list of all time greatest marathon runners.

   Steamtown Marathon runners able to stay a step ahead of recession (Citizens Voice)
The nearly stagnant economy has not slowed runners or sponsors for the Steamtown Marathon. Despite economics constraints that have limited consumer spending on other major sporting events, the 13th annual Steamtown Marathon will be run Sunday with a consistent number of entrants, nearing 1,900 and roughly the same sponsorship revenue as in recent years.

   Marathon runners, organizers ready to forget last year at Chicago Marathon (Chicago Sun-Times)
Last year's Chicago marathon which was closed roughly four hours into the race left many participants confused, sweaty and wandering the streets of Chicago. Denise Sluterbeck's dream of finishing the marathon distance was ended just 8 miles short of the goal. She is lacing up her shoes once again and will go the distance this Sunday.

   Des Moines Marathon Breaks Registration Record (KCCI - Des Moines)
October 19th will mark the start of a record year for the Des Moines Marathon. Last year's race totaled 5,392 runners for the weekend events. Registration for the 2008 edition has already eclipsed 5,440 participants with over a week to go before the race. The race has 35 elite athletes and many former race winners registered.

   Dupont Forest Trail Marathon is Anyone's Race (Blue Ridge Now)
The sixth annual Dupont Forest Trail Marathon takes place this Sunday. The scenic course will wind through 10,400 acres of the Dupont Forest. Last year's winner Aaron Saft is racing a 50 kilometer race on Saturday and may be a late entry on the men's side. The 2007 women's winner Anne Lundblad will not defend her title. These situations leave the race title wide open. With great weather and an increase in elite athletes attending the race it could be anyone's race.

   Running Professor Can Teach The Kids Some Things at Hartford Marathon (Hartford Courant)
Professor David Sonstroem teaches 19th Century British Literature and a grammar course at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. The 72 year old professor has run the Hartford Marathon six times and won his age group each year. He hopes to run something under 3 hours and 42 minutes this year. He trains with a group of other runners and they have logged over 300,000 miles.

   Houston Marathon party rescheduled (The Houston Chronicle)
The Houston Marathon’s Run for a Reason Kickoff Party, which was postponed because of Hurricane Ike, will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Memorial Park’s Picnic Loop. The event will focus on more than 40 charities which are participating in this year’s program and will feature live music and refreshments, with running club and vendor booths. The first 2,000 people to present their registration confirmation will get a free Houston Marathon in-training T-shirt.

The 13th Annual Surf City USA Marathon is now open for registration. The weekend events include a marathon, half-marathon and 5 kilometer race. Nearly 17,000 registrants will participate in the events to be held on Super Bowl Sunday which is February 1st, 2009.

   Friends plan to run Chicago marathon in honor of UW pharmacy student Adam Nickel. (The Daily Cardinal)
A group of University of Wisconsin Madison students will be running the Chicago Marathon in honor of Adam Nickel who passed suddenly as he finished the Little Rock Marathon on March 2. Nickel had raised over $3,800 dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as he trained for the San Diego Marathon.
 
   Chicago Marathon to add medical stations in case going gets tough (Medill Reports Chicago)
The number of Chicago Marathon participants that required medical care during last year's race has prompted race officials to staff medical aid stations throughout the course for access to anyone who may feel the effects that running a marathon will bring. Medical advisers continue to encourage participants to drink water and stay well hydrated.

Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania was certainly earned a noteworthy place in marathon history on August 17, 2008 in Beijing. At 38 she became the oldest competitor, of either gender, to win an Olympic Gold Medal in the marathon. She will compete again at this weekends Chicago Marathon and it could add to her status among the top ten greatest women marathon runners.

Setanta Sports will broadcast the Dublin Marathon and provide a further one hour broadcast of the highlights of the entire race a few days after. The 29th Dublin Marathon will honor Noel Carroll who established the race in 1980.

Jeff Sacchini has organized the inaugural Kaua'i Marathon to kick off September of 2009. The course has been marked and officials are excited to build a world class event. The race is limited to 1,500 participants and capped with a 7 hour time limit.

   Bates professor, historian stricken after Maine Marathon (The Sun Journal)
Shortly after the Maine Marathon, in Portland Maine, Bates professor Douglas Hodgkin apparently suffered a heart attack. The professor emeritus was recovering in a Portland hospital on Tuesday. He began feeling ill while receiving a massage after the race and was rushed to the hospital.
 
 Midsouth Marathon

   Mid-South Marathon set for 10th anniversary November 1 (Times Herald)
The Cross Country Ramblers Association of Wynne Arkansas will hold the tenth annual Midsouth Marathon Championships on Saturday November 1. The out and back course boasts of creative aid stations that race officials offer prizes for the best support.
 
 New York City Marathon

   Radcliffe heads to Portsmouth for New York City Marathon warm up. (The Sporting Life)
Paula Radcliffe has chosen to warm up for the defense of her New York Marathon title by racing in the 10-mile Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth on October 26. This will be the weekend before she appears in America for her first 26-miler, the New York City Marathon on November 2, since the Olympics in August.

   'Thoner Runs New York City Marathon For Fallen Pal. (New York Post)
During the Men's Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City, Abdi Abdirahman stood next to his roommate and training partner, Ryan Shay, for the last time. New York was a heartbreaking race for Abdi. A hip injury forced him to drop out of the race and he lost Ryan suddenly to cardiac arrhythmia.
 
 Soweto Marathon

   Soweto Marathon: ‘All systems go for People’s Race’ (Sowetan)
The Soweto Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 2. Race day events include a 10 kilometer run, 20 kilometer walk, and 5 kilometer fun run along with the marathon. The events will start at Elkah Stadium in Moroka. Lesotho-born Teboho Sello won last year's marathon in a time of 2 hours 18minutes and 51 seconds.

   Weather forecast pleases Chicago Marathon officials (Chicago Tribune)
Organizers of this year's 31st Chicago Marathon promise more water and more Gatorade. The weather forecasters have promised overcast, dreary skies which some runners will call perfect conditions considering the debacle of last year's race. Heat and humidity forced officials to cut short the 26.2 mile race.
