Many countries choose their Olympic Team Members by committee, but not the USA. Since 1968, the U.S. Olympic marathon team has been selected at the Trials race - in a one-day contest where the top three finishers earned coveted spots on the team (and, in recent Olympics, provided Olympic "A" standards were met). Before 1968, the U.S. Olympic marathoners were selected based on a series of marathon races.

The history of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, albeit short, is rich and storied. 1972 Olympic gold medalist and 1976 Olympic silver medalist in the marathon, Frank Shorter is the only man to finish first in consecutive U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. In 1984, Pete Pfitzinger had the lead, lost the lead in the last mile and reclaimed the lead to win. At the 1988 Trials race, Mark Conover pulled a major upset with a stunning victory, while in 1996, Bob Kempainen won the race and a berth on his second Olympic team despite throwing up several times in the latter stages of the race.

The first Olympic Team Trials were open to anyone who wanted to attend and the race was held at altitude in Alamosa, CO to attempt to simulate the altitude and course that might be found at the Mexico City Olympics. George Young won the race in his debut marathon.

Frank Shorter and Kenny Moore broke away early in the 1972 trials race and ran together to finish in a tie. Frank Shorter would go on to win the Gold Medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics and Moore would finish fourth at those Olympics.

Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers ran virtually step for step at in what seemed to be a sub-2:10 pace until two or three miles from the finish Rodgers was affected by a leg injury and had to drop back. Shorter would become the first, and as of this writing only, man to win back to back Olympic Trials Marathons. Don Kardong would finish third in 2:13:54.

At the 1976 Olympics, Shorter would go on to win silver behind East German Wlademar Cierpinski who - in recent years - has been suspected of using performance enhancing drugs. Bill Rodgers led the Olympic Marathon in the early miles but fell back with the same leg injury that affected his Trials performance - he would however, rebound to handily win the 1976 New York City Marathon. Don Kardong in fourth place at the Olympics, missing the bronze medal by just three seconds.

In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and US President Jimmy Carter provided an ultimatum that the USA would boycott the Olympics if the Soviet Union did not withdraw from Afghanistan by Feb. 20, 1980. No Soviet withdrawal was made and on March 21, 1980, the United States officially announced that it would boycott the Olympics.

Some athletes, most notably Bill Rodgers, chose not to run in the Trials as they would not result in an Olympic berth. But for the athletes that did come to compete, the fact that the athletes were competing for the Olympic team to nowhere did not deter them from running their best marathon and the day was filled with personal bests and records. The top three finishers ran personal bests and ran what remains the fastest three Olympic Marathon Trials times. Fifty-six men finished in under 2:20 another Trials record.

Pete Pfitzinger, a relative unknown, broke away from the field just past the halfway point and built a 150 meter lead. In the last mile, John Tuttle passed Pfitzinger and then Alberto Salazar passed both of them. In the final 400 meters, Pfitzinger found another gear and passed Tuttle and overcame Salazar, the race favorite, in the last meters. At the Olympics in Los Angeles, the Trials champion was the top American, 11th in 2:13:53.

Mark Conover surprised the field and the pundits with the win. Conover and Ed Eyestone took control of the race after 17 miles and worked together over the final miles. With a mile remaining, Conover who came into the Trials race with a 2:18:03 qualifier pulled away from Eyestone for the stunning victory. 1984 Trials winner Pete Pfitzinger surged late to earn the final Olympic spot.

Under warm, windy conditions, Bill Reifsnyder and Keith Brantly tried to run away with the Trials race, but near 22 miles, the trio of Steve Spence, Ed Eyestone and Bob Kempainen caught the duo. Spence, the 1991 World Championships marathon bronze medalist, used a 4:49 26th mile to win the race in 2:12:43, a trip to Barcelona, Spain and $58,000.

Eyestone, a 1988 Olympic marathoner, secured his second Olympic berth with his second place performance (2:12:51), while Kempainen who overcame injury surprised the field by earning the third and final U.S. Olympic marathon team position.

At the 1996 Olympic Marathon Trials, Bob Kempainen, a 1992 Olympic marathoner, brought new meaning to the term "guts" with his performance. Just past 21 miles, as Kempainen pulled away from Mark Coogan and Keith Brantly, he began to vomit. His second eruption staggered him for a moment, but he calmly wiped his chin, gathered himself and incredibly increased his lead.

Despite his distress, he ran the 23rd and 24th miles in 4:42 and 4:33 respectively which finally broke Coogan and Brantly.

Kempainen, the fastest U.S. marathoner(2:08:47 at Boston in '94), maintained his lead and crossed the finish line in 2:12:45. Kempainen's gutsy effort earned him another trip to the Olympics, a record first place marathon prize ($100,000), a course record and his first marathon win in seven attempts. With about 400 meters left, Coogan passed Brantly, the defending champion, to claim his trip to Atlanta and $40,000 with a 2:13:05, a personal record. Brantly, the 1995 USA Running Circuit champion, captured the final Olympic berth in 2:13:22 and $30,000. Perennial national contender, Steve Plasencia finished fourth (2:14:20), while Marco Ochoa (seeded #72) followed two seconds later in 2:14:22. Under cool conditions on a challenging course, nine runners set personal records (Coogan, Ochoa, Keith Dowling, Jon Warren, David Morris, Terrence Mahon, Craig Woshner, Tom Redding and Steve Wilson).

Like the Women's Trials race in Columbia, the U.S. Men's Olympic Marathon Trials faced difficult weather conditions and a challenging course. At the start, the temperature was 61 degrees and the humidity 84 percent and as the day progressed it got worse. After several frontrunners, Peter DeLaCerda pushed the pace at 15 miles and went for a sub 2:14 time (the Olympic "A" standard). After 20 miles, Rod DeHaven began to gain on DeLaCerda as his lead shrunk to 23 seconds. At mile 22, DeHaven cut DeLaCerda's lead to just 8 seconds. At 1:55:28 into the race, DeHaven took the lead from the Alamosa, Colo. resident who did not respond to the move.

DeLaCerda, however, began a comeback during the 24th mile, running just 2 seconds behind the third fastest qualifier. DeHaven, 33, from Madison, Wisc. responded and picked up the pace with a 4:56 mile, stretching his lead to 13 seconds over DeLaCerda.

The computer programmer continued to stretch his lead and won easily in 2:15:30. DeLaCerda finished second in 2:16:18, with 1996 Olympian Mark Coogan 3rd in 2:17:04. "It was a race of attrition, and that's the way it was. I'm ecstatic but in a sad way because I'm the only one (who qualified for the Olympics). It's a bittersweet feeling," said the South Dakota State graduate.

After failing to qualify three runners for the 2000 Olympics for failing to meet the Olympics A Standard of 2:14 - a low point in USA Marathoning - the decision was made to run the 2004 Trials on a fast course and the course and runners lived up to expectations. On a cold windy day, Brian Sell - one of the Hansons runners - made a bold move to run at the front of the race until he was finally caught at mile 21. Two men who had participated in the 2000 Olympics at the 10,000M, Alan Culpepper and Meb Keflezighi, then took the lead and battled to the finish with Culpepper winning by just five seconds, 2:11:42 for Culpepper and 2:11:47 for Keflezighi. Dan Browne ran behind the two leaders, maintaining his third position through the finish in 2:12:02. Two Hansons runners finished in fourth and fifth positions with Trent Briney knocking more than 8 minutes off his previous best to finish in fourth place in 2:12:35 and Clint Verran taking the fifth position in 2:14:37.

The 2004 Olympic Trials were significant in a number of ways. The early date of the Trials relative to the Olympic Marathon (204 days) showed a shift in thinking about the relationship between the Trials and the Olympics. The winning time set by Culpepper was the second fastest winning time for the Olympic Trials Marathon and fourth fastest Olympic Trials Marathon time ever, showing that American Marathoners were regaining their international standing and could likely compete on an international stage for the first time in years. The high profile and relative success of the Hansons Team - with one runner leading most of the race and two others finishing in fourth and fifth positions - presaged the success of the team-training programs that were beginning to reemerge. And, on a sour note, one finisher, Eddy Hellebuyck was disqualified for EPO found in a post-race drug test.

The 2007 Men's Olympic Trials Marathon was highlighted with surprises and met with tragedy. On a multiple loop course through New York City's Central Park, the pre-race favorites failed to perform as expected and did not make the team, leaving the window open for a new crop of runners. 2004 Olympians Meb Keflezighi, Alan Culpepper and Dan Browne; together with Abdi Abdirahman were tapped as favorites. Ultimately, Abdirahman and Culpepper dropped out of the race while Dan Browne and Meb Keflezighi finished disappointedly in 6th and 8th place respectively. The top finishers: Ryan Hall in a new Olympic Trials Marathon record of 2:09:02 (and two seconds faster than the winner of the next day's NYC Marathon), followed by Dathan Ritzenhein in 2:11:07 and Brian Sell in 2:11:40. Marathon great and new American, Khalid Khannouchi, took the first alternate spot with his 2:12:34 finish despite having worked through injuries and training during Ramadan. The marathon may be best remebered, however, for the tragedy of the day: Ryan Shay, a popular runner and reigning USA Marathon champion, collapsed before mile 6 on the course and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, the victim of heart failure due to a pre-existing condition.

On a fast loop course in Houston, four men ran sub-2:10 for the first and only time at an Olympic Trials Marathon. Meb Keflezighi, an American hero saw redemption after failing to make the 2008 Olympic team, winning in a personal best time of 2:09:08. Ryan Hall, the fastest American marathoner and favorite, finished in second place. Abdi Abdirahman surprised many by making his third Olympic team and finishing in third place. Dathan Ritzenhein, fast charging and likely to have caught Abdirahman if he had started his chase sooner, finished close behind and as first alternate. Ritzenhein would ultimately go to the 2012 Olympics in the 10000m run and come back with a personal best at the October Chicago Marathon.

The weather was not quite as bad as the original predictions of temperatures in the 80s. Instead the race started with temperatures in the high 60s and ended with temperatures in the low 70s... But with little shade on the Los Angeles course, the weather did take its toll with relative slow times and a number of drop outs.

By mile 20, the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon was a race of two men, the veteran marathoner Meb Keflezighi and the debut marathoner Galen Rupp. At the end, Rupp demonstrated that he could master the distance and was the winner in 2:11:12. Meb Keflezighi made his 4th Olympic team by finishing in second place in 2:12:20. Jared Ward finished in third place in 2:13:00.
