2009 World Championships Marathon - Complete Coverage
The IAAF World Championships in Athletics is an eight day event held every two years highlighting the best competitors in track and field. The Olympic Games held every four years stands at the pinnacle of a career, but the World Championships can be a close second and offers the highest caliber athletes an incomparable opportunity to perform on a world stage against the best in the world.
The 2009 World Championships will take place in Berlin, the capital city of Germany which following World War II was a city divided by the Berlin Wall, a symbol of political division in the world. The last time the world descended on Berlin for a track and field (and marathoning) championships was the 1936 Olympics, another divisive event as the Nazi nation discriminated against certain competitors. It is appropriate and welcome that twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall that the world would come to Berlin to represent their nations in this monumental event.
