2008 USA Women's Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifiers

For the Boston Trials, athletes were required to meet one of the qualifying times in one of two distances: the Marathon and 10,000M. Runners meeting the A-Standard time in the Marathon are provided with an all-expenses paid trip to the Trials, whereas others are invited to enter, but must pay their own way.

The 2008 Olympic Trials Standards:
A-Standard (trip to the Trials is paid)
Marathon - 2:39:00 and under
B-Standard
Marathon 2:39:01-2:47:00
10,000M - 33:00 and under

New Qualifying Standards for 2008
For each Olympics Trials, new qualifying standards are set and in various distances. For the 2008 Women's Trials, the 10,000M distance was added as an alternative method to qualify for the trials. We're not sure why this was - either to suggest that a runner having a bad day at a marathon might have a chance to qualify with a strong shorter performance, or perhaps to encourage track athletes to step up to the marathon. A similar experiment was tried with the Men's trials, where both the 10,000M and 5,000M distances were added as qualifying distances. But.... the experiment seems to have been a failure. The standards set for the shorter distances were just off the A-Standards for the same shorter distance (for the Women's 10,000M track qualifying times are 34:00 for the B-Standard and 32:45 for the A-Standard). So, essentially the shorter standard suggests that anyone who qualifies for the 10,000M gets an automatic qualification to the marathon, but they will need to pay their own way to run a race in which they have little chance of making the team and may damage their chance to qualify for the Olympic team in the 10,000M. So, while 10 women qualified for the trials solely with a 10,000M time, only one - Blake Russell who was 4th at the 2004 Trials - chose to enter the Trials Marathon.

The Numbers... 254 Qualifying times were set by 182 distinct individuals. Of the 182 individuals who qualified, 160 entered to run the Trials marathon. Among the 22 women who qualified but did not enter to run the race are some well-known athletes including marathoners Jen Rhines, Katie McGregor, Jenny Crain; and track stars Kara Goucher and Sara Slattery.

First to Qualify, Last to Qualify, Most Qualifications
The first woman to qualify: Nicole Aish on 10/2/05 as she won the 2005 USA Marathon Championships, the first race eligible as a qualifier. The last woman to qualify: Lauren Matthews Grossbard on 3/16/08 at the Green Lake Marathon [editors note: what is that marathon, can anyone tell us?].

The "most qualified" entrants: Mary Akor with ten qualifying marathons, followed by Katie McGregor with five qualifying times. Seven women had four qualifying races: Deena Kastor, Susan Loken, Christine Lundy, Erin Moeller, Kristin Price, Jen Rhines and Sara Slattery.

Below is the complete qualifiers and entrants list. Any woman who has completed a qualifying time is listed below - after qualifying, a woman must declare that they are entering the race. Those who qualified but did not enter are shown dimmed. Note also that some of these women who have "entered" will not make it to the starting line, and as of this writing, we have heard that Marla Runyan and Colleen DeReuck have announced that they will not be running.
