London Marathon - Prize Money and Starter List

Prize Money and Bonuses

Different marathons have different strategies for their prize purse. Some simply provide payouts to the top athletes based on the order in which they finish - the Boston Marathon is one that does that. For those races, the time does not matter at all to the compensation for the athletes. Some the prize purse on the order of finish, but then supplement that with time bonuses to encourage the athletes to run fast as well.

London - focusing on time - goes to the extreme where the finish order prizes are significant, but many will earn more money through the time bonuses than they will from the placement prizes. London's time bonuses are significant and generous - and they will ensure a fast race. On top of that, it is a well-known fact that many of the invitied guests will have their own contracts with the London organization whereby their appearance fees are tied to the achievement of specific time goals set for each athlete - this is all about time.

And to help the runners with their times, the London Marathon will employ pacers to lead the runners through at a variety of different times. We'll expect the front pace group to go out at world record pace. For the women, the marathon often has a pacer to lead out for a sub-2:20 time, but we're not sure whether any of the women in the field will be up for that on race day. We shall see.
