London Marathon - Sunday, April 21

Victah Sailer

The 2013 London Marathon brought together the greatest fields ever and expectations were high. How could the results match the expectations?
The men went off at better than WR pace - eight men at that pace and four men still ahead of World Record at mile 19. Ultimately, the men could not keep that pace and the man with the most gas in his tank, Tsegaye Kebede overtook the lead in the final mile to win in 2:06:04. Emmanuel Mutai, slowing, held second place in 2:06:34.
The women took the opposite approach to the men, a slow start and fast finish. While a collision took out favorite Tiki Gelana, the competition unfolded as a race between Priscah Jeptoo and Edna Kiplagat. Jeptoo had speed after mile 21 to build and extend her lead and win in 2:20:15.
