At the 2002 London Marathon, Khalid Khannouchi, now running for America, outran running legends Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia and Paul Tergat of Kenya while breaking his own three-year-old world record by four seconds and setting a new one of 2:05:38.

At the 2003 Berlin Marathon, Paul Tergat of Kenya smashed Khalid Kannouchi's world record by 38 seconds and became the first runner to finish the marathon in under 2:05:00. This was Tergat's first marathon victory despite owning several of the top all-time finishes in narrow defeats. Tergat narrowly beat out his countryman and pacemaker Sammy Korir by 1 second.
