A little bit of background, I m a marathon runner who has completed several marathons including Boston (PR 3:05) and recently completed my first Ironman Triathlon. I train extensively for endurance events only.
If given choice between the two products you mentioned, I would choose GU for running and the Clif Shot Blox for cycling, distances under 60 miles.
GU, I do not care for. The consistencies of the product are undesirable for me, but it is incredibly easy to ingest those ever important calories during a run. Clif Shot Blox on the other hand is great but hard for me to chew while running.
Cycling on the other hand they are great. With the exception that over long distances the sweetness of the product becomes wildly nauseating. Typically on longer rides I opt for maybe one or two packages of Shot Blox but supplement my nutrition with granola, fruit, and nut bars instead.
The problem with creating a new product is that this market is very saturated with a wide variety of products.
Jelly Belly Sports Beans GU (Chomps and Gels) Clif (Shots and Shot Blox) Carb BOOM Accel Honey Stinger Sharkies Power Bar
And the list can go on and on.
Hope this helps.
Nick
